Legal Services Intern - Part-Time Term Position (May-August 2025)

Responsibilities:
- Conduct legal screenings to determine eligibility for immigration benefits
- Research legal issues and country conditions
- Draft briefs and legal memoranda
- Gather documentation and assist with case preparation
- Translate documents or assist with interpretation
- Participate in team meetings
- Meet regularly with a supervisor
Qualifications:
- Currently enrolled in law school
- Personal experience with immigration systems preferred
- Collaborative and multicultural work experience
- Strong communication skills
- Ability to work with Quaker principles
- Self-motivated and detail-oriented
- Fluency in a foreign language (Spanish preferred)
The **MEMBERS ONLY**SIGN UP NOW***. is seeking a Legal Services Intern for a part-time, non-exempt term position from May to August 2025 in Newark, NJ. This position offers the opportunity to work with AFSC staff and gain hands-on experience in the legal field while supporting immigrants seeking humanitarian and family-based forms of immigration relief. The intern will work 35 hours per week for 10 weeks and will have the chance to observe and participate in immigration court proceedings and USCIS interviews.
Responsibilities for this position include conducting legal screenings to determine eligibility for immigration benefits, researching legal issues and country conditions, drafting briefs and legal memoranda, gathering documentation, and assisting with case preparation. The intern may also be responsible for translating documents or providing interpretation, as necessary. They will participate in team meetings and meet regularly with a supervisor to discuss progress and receive guidance.
The ideal candidate for this position is a current law school student with personal experience with immigration systems. They should have the ability to work collaboratively in multicultural contexts and possess strong oral and written communication skills. Additionally, the intern should be self-motivated, well-organized, and able to prioritize assignments and workload. Fluency in a foreign language, particularly Spanish, is a plus.
This is an unpaid position, but AFSC is willing to work with students who have secured academic credit or outside funding for their summer internship.
