Job Title: Investigative Attorney

Job Responsibilities:
The Investigative Attorney will be part of the Office of the Inspector General for the New York City Police Department (OIG-NYPD) within the Department of Investigation. The primary responsibility is to conduct confidential and sensitive investigations into the operations, policies, programs, and practices of the New York Police Department (NYPD). The role involves:
- Reviewing police reports and related documentation.
- Conducting interviews with members of the public and law enforcement professionals.
- Gathering and analyzing evidence.
- Assessing risks and critically analyzing problems and deficiencies in complex police operations.
- Preparing well-organized and thorough written investigative reports and sections for OIG-NYPD's public reports.
- Updating OIG-NYPD staff on relevant public developments, including litigation related to NYPD.
- Liaising with representatives from NYPD and other governmental agencies.
- Maintaining and enforcing internal policies and procedures.
- Researching, drafting, and reviewing memoranda, correspondence, and related materials.
The candidate should be conscientious, self-motivated, and a creative thinker who can work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
Education and Experience Information:
- Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an ABA-accredited law school.
- Active bar membership from any of the 50 states, District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, or the US Virgin Islands.
- A minimum of three years of recent full-time relevant legal experience subsequent to admission to any bar.
Preferred Skills:
- Graduate from an accredited law school and NYS Bar admission.
- Knowledge of, and demonstrated interest in, law enforcement, criminal justice, police accountability, and/or civil rights issues.
- A minimum of three years of professional legal experience, preferably including experience as a prosecutor or other litigator.
- Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively with a variety of personnel.
- Excellent research and writing skills, particularly in drafting and editing detailed investigative reports.
- Strong negotiation and analytical skills.
- Experience working with government agencies and members of the public.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and operate effectively in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to work with teams composed of investigators, attorneys, policy analysts, and auditors.
- Effective problem-solving abilities and demonstrated sound judgment.
- Knowledge of Accurint, Lexis Nexis, and E-Justice.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
- Familiarity with New York City is a plus.
- Valid New York State driver's license.
Salary Information:
Salary range for the position is $75, – $89,.
Additional Information:
- The position does not require an exam.
- New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment, with certain exceptions for City Employees.
