Job Title: Court Attorney JG - 23
Job Responsibilities:
- Research and analyze legal issues and questions.
- Serve in a confidential capacity and under supervision for judges or groups of judges in various courts, including Supreme Court, County Court, Surrogate's Court, the Court of Claims, and Family Courts.
- May be assigned to judges designated as Acting Justices of the Supreme Court for one full term or less.
- Participate in the NYC Family Court Volunteer Attorney Program (VAP) in Queens Family Court.
- Interview litigants, identify legal issues, and schedule consultations with volunteer attorneys.
- Meet with volunteer attorneys to discuss issues prior to consultations and participate in the consultations with litigants.
- Screen and assess legal issues of litigants seeking consultations on matters such as child support, paternity, family offense, custody, visitation, and guardianship.
- Provide procedural and legal information to unrepresented litigants.
- Schedule consultations and prepare volunteer attorneys for these consultations.
- Review legal documents, research, and analyze questions and issues.
- Maintain relationships with pro bono organizations and coordinators throughout the city.
- Review case and family issues and make appropriate referrals.
- Review family court history of litigants seeking consultations.
- Train and recruit attorneys and organizations.
- Attend citywide pro bono events and collect and report statistical information.
- Monitor and report program outcomes.
- Assist in other special projects as needed.
Education and Experience Information:
- Admission to the New York State Bar; or
- Graduation from an accredited law school and admission to the New York State Bar within 18 months of appointment.
- Candidates with 5 or more years of experience are preferred.
Salary Information:
- Base Salary: $84,659
- Additional Location Pay: $4,920
