Job Title: Law Clerk 2025 - 2026

Job Responsibilities:
1. Supreme Court law clerks work with justices on complex cases involving difficult issues of law.
2. Appellate Division law clerks conduct research, analyze legal data, prepare legal memoranda, process emergent motion applications, and proofread published opinions.
3. Law clerks for assignment judges learn all aspects of court administration and assist with processing emergent motions.
4. Trial court law clerks gain practical experience while gaining valuable insight into the judicial process by observing judicial proceedings, attending conferences with attorneys and judges, receiving training in mediation, mediating small claims cases, and summarizing information for judges.
5. Tax Court law clerks perform duties similar to those assigned to law clerks in the Appellate Division and trial courts, but do not mediate cases.
6. Law clerks may be required to conduct legal research, prepare legal memos, manage the judge’s docket, communicate regularly with counsel and courthouse staff, and draft legal orders and opinions.

Education and Experience Information:
1. Law clerks must have graduated from a law school approved by the American Bar Association by the time of their law clerk appointment.
2. The Judiciary's law clerkship program is intended for recent law school graduates, defined as graduating within the last four years.
3. Excellent writing and analytical skills are essential.
4. It is helpful to have completed a course in mediation prior to the start of the clerkship. All trial court law clerks who will serve as mediators must first complete the Judiciary sponsored 12-hour mediation training or its equivalent.
5. Applicants selected for clerkships can request a waiver from attending the Judiciary's training program by providing documentation that confirms completion of an approved alternative dispute resolution course.

1. Supreme Court: $76,400
2. Supreme Court Appellate Division: $69,750
3. Superior Court Assignment Judge: $63,950
4. Superior Court Chancery Division (General Equity): $63,950
5. Superior Court Law Division (Civil and Criminal): $58,900
6. Superior Court Chancery Division (Family): $58,900
7. Tax Court: $58,900

Additional Requirements and Information:
1. Law clerks may hold outside employment with prior approval as provided in the Code of Conduct for Judiciary Employees.
2. Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.
3. US citizenship is not required, but selected candidates must be authorized to work in the US according to Department of Homeland Security, US Citizenship and Immigration Services regulations.
4. Individuals selected for clerkships must agree to a thorough background check, which will include fingerprinting.
5. In accordance with . 52:14-7 (L. 2011, Chapter 70), the "New Jersey First Act," all persons newly hired by the Judiciary within one year must establish, and then maintain, principal residence in the State of New Jersey. Law clerks are not subject to the residency law during their court term.
6. Approximately 480 clerkships are available, with limited numbers for the Supreme Court, Superior Court Appellate Division, Superior Court Assignment Judges, Superior Court Chancery Division in general equity court, and in the Tax Court.
