City Attorney - Legal Expert in Municipal Law
The City of Austin is seeking a highly experienced and qualified City Attorney to join our team. As the City's chief legal advisor, the City Attorney will be responsible for providing legal counsel to the Mayor and City Council, City Manager, department heads, and other city staff. This is a full-time position with a competitive salary and benefits package.
Key Responsibilities:
- Represent the City in all legal proceedings and litigation
- Provide legal opinions, advice and counsel on municipal activities to ensure compliance with laws and regulations
- Draft, review and approve all legal documents, contracts and instruments
- Conduct legal research and stay up-to-date on local, state and federal legislation and jurisprudence affecting municipal operations
- Negotiate and resolve legal issues with various stakeholders and interest groups
- Attract, hire, develop and retain legal talent
- Supervise and manage external legal counsel
- Monitor and evaluate the efficiency and effectiveness of legal service delivery
- Maintain relationships with city departments, Mayor and City Council offices, and outside agencies and organizations
- Develop and implement plans to proactively identify and resolve legal issues for the City
Qualifications:
- Graduation from an accredited law school
- Minimum of seven years of experience as an attorney, including five years of municipal experience and two years in an upper management legal capacity
- Admission to the Bar of the State of Texas and in good standing with the Texas State Bar
- Familiarity with municipal, civil and criminal law, judicial procedure and rules of evidence
- Strong research, writing and analytical skills
- Ability to build and maintain effective relationships with various stakeholders
- Experience in budgeting, personnel management and legal talent acquisition and development
