Job Responsibilities:
Law clerks in the **MEMBERS ONLY**SIGN UP NOW***. perform a variety of tasks that support the judicial process across different court levels, including the Supreme Court, Appellate Division, Superior Court, and Tax Court. Key responsibilities include:
- Supreme Court: Work with justices on complex legal cases, conduct legal research, prepare written memoranda, and assist in drafting opinions.
- Appellate Division: Conduct research, analyze legal data, prepare legal memoranda, process emergent motion applications, and proofread published opinions.
- Superior Court (Assignment Judge, Chancery Division, Law Division, Tax Court): Gain practical experience, observe judicial proceedings, attend conferences, receive mediation training, mediate small claims cases, summarize information for judges, and assist with court administration and emergent motions.
- Tax Court: Perform duties similar to those in the Appellate Division and trial courts, focusing on tax challenges, reviewing and processing motions, conducting legal research, drafting legal documents, managing motion calendars, and assisting with remote proceedings.
Education and Experience Information:
Applicants must have graduated from a law school approved by the American Bar Association (ABA) within the past four years. Excellent writing and analytical skills are essential. It is beneficial for candidates to have completed a course in mediation. Law clerks who serve as mediators must complete a 12-hour mediation training or its equivalent sponsored by the Judiciary. Candidates must provide an official, final law school transcript at the time of hire.
Salary Information:
Salaries are based on a 52-week court term plus an overlap period. The following are the salaries for the 2024-2025 Court Term, with the 2025-2026 salaries to be determined:
- Supreme Court: $76,400
- Supreme Court Appellate Division: $69,750
- Superior Court Assignment Judge: $63,950
- Superior Court Chancery Division (General Equity): $63,950
- Superior Court Law Division (Civil and Criminal): $58,900
- Superior Court Chancery Division (Family): $58,900
- Tax Court: $58,900
Additional Information:
- Approximately 480 clerkships are available annually.
- The Judiciary offers a hybrid work schedule allowing up to four days per month of remote work, contingent on high-speed internet access and installation of a multifactor authentication app.
- Non-US citizens must be authorized to work in the US.
- A thorough background check, including fingerprinting, is required for selected candidates.
- New Jersey residency is required within one year of hire, with exemptions available for law clerks during their court term.
- Law clerks may hold outside employment with prior approval according to the Code of Conduct for Judiciary Employees.
