PARALEGAL JOB DESCRIPTION H1: Paralegal Job Description Paralegals are responsible for assisting attorneys with substantive legal work and the day-to-day needs of the attorney(s). This job description outlines the primary duties and responsibilities, knowledge, skills and abilities, and working conditions of a paralegal position. H2: Primary Duties and Responsibilities Paralegals are primarily responsible for: * Communicating with attorney and/or client to take instructions, obtain information, report on status of matters and otherwise support legal actions. * Working with attorneys to draft and prepare all documentation required for various types of transactions as assigned. * In some instances, responsible for clerical work in preparing documents. * Organizing, maintaining, reviewing, summarizing, and analyzing documents and records, compiling information, and recommending course of action. * Developing and maintaining knowledge of statutes, court decisions and customs relating to legal procedures and practices in appropriate areas of law including filing procedures in all required states. * Preparing and overseeing status checklists. * Assisting attorneys in the preparation of filings pertaining to the specific areas of law. * Requesting and gathering copies of documents from various sources as necessary. * Other duties and projects as assigned. H2: Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required Paralegals should have: * A Bachelor’s degree, advanced paralegal certificate, or relevant job experience. * The ability to perform legal research. * The ability to organize large volumes of diverse materials and draft complex documents. * The ability to analyze legal documents for accuracy. * The ability to recognize legal/technical issues and effectively recommend course of action. * In-depth knowledge of legal terminology and principles. * Basic computer skills. Preferred qualifications include prior law firm experience, as well as being detail oriented, having strong attention to detail, being able to work independently and cooperatively in a team environment, being able to prioritize and work under a tight schedule, and being able to travel and work overtime, as needed. H2: Working Conditions Paralegals should be prepared for: * Physical effort such as lifting up to 40 lbs., some stretching and reaching, ability to work under stress and time restrains, walking and climbing stairs, and sitting long periods. * An indoor office environment with extended periods of time working on a PC. * The possibility of working more than 40 hours per week. H2: Job Status This is a full time, nonexempt, hours per week position.
