Director of Paralegal Services - Overseeing Paralegal Team in Criminal Defense Practice

The Legal Aid Society is seeking a dedicated and experienced Director of Paralegal Services to join our Criminal Defense Practice in New York City. As the primary public defender in the city, our practice provides holistic, client-centered representation to over 100,000 people facing criminal charges.

Roles and Responsibilities:

- Lead and manage a team of 125+ paralegals in the Criminal Defense Practice, including recruitment, training, career development, supervision, and evaluation
- Develop and implement policies and protocols to ensure best practices for paralegal staff in providing holistic client-centered representation
- Collaborate with other members of the Criminal Defense Practice leadership team to enhance client representation through institutional knowledge, policies, and procedures
- Maintain relationships with third-party vendors and stakeholders to advocate for best practices in paralegal services
- Monitor and maintain statistical reports for workload distribution and work product quality
- Participate in scheduled trainings and encourage professional development for paralegal staff
- Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

- Bachelor's degree in paralegal studies or equivalent
- 6+ years of experience as a litigation paralegal, with at least 2 years in a management position
- E-discovery and E-filing experience required
- Proficient understanding of criminal legal practice and processes
- Proficiency in computer and electronic data software, e-discovery platforms, and case management systems
- Dedication to advocacy for low-income individuals
- Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion values
- Prior supervisory experience with professional development planning and implementation
- Ability to foster teamwork and build relationships with stakeholders
- Excellent oral and writing skills
- Experience working in a unionized workplace is a plus

Salary and Benefits:

- Salary range of $125,000 to $155,000, dependent on qualifications and collective bargaining agreement for unionized roles
