Litigation Assistant - Job Description

The Legal Aid Society, the oldest and largest social justice legal services organization in the nation, is seeking dedicated and passionate Litigation Assistants to join our team in the Criminal Defense Practice. This is a great opportunity to be a part of our newly organized Paralegal Services Unit and provide holistic, client-centered representation to over 200,000 people facing misdemeanor, felony, and homicide charges in New York City.

As a Litigation Assistant, you will play a critical role in supporting attorneys and clients as a member of the defense team. You will work closely with the Discovery Unit, counsel, and defense team to gather, organize, and analyze discovery, investigations, and other pertinent materials in preparation for mitigation and/or litigation. You will also assist in preparing documents, videos, and other materials for hearings or trials, as well as help coordinate witnesses, prepare documents, and assist in presenting evidence. You will provide support and input throughout the entire litigation process, from pre-trial motions to jury selection to the notice of appeal, if necessary.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

- Manage and organize discovery, investigation, and other case materials using applicable data management platforms
- Create spreadsheets or other logs to aid in managing and organizing digital files and case information
- Organize and analyze discovery from prosecutors and provide in-depth analysis to assigned attorneys
- Review discovery to locate potential sources of additional evidence and notify attorneys and staff
- Understand New York State discovery laws and assist attorneys in filing challenges to prosecutors' certificates of compliance
- Provide insight, analysis, and assistance in litigation and/or mitigation strategy
- Assist attorneys in conducting legal research and drafting documents
- Act as a liaison between attorneys, clients, and other parties
- Coordinate witnesses and assist in preparing them for hearings or trials
- Oversee retaining and payment of expert witnesses and coordinate travel and other logistics
- Accompany attorneys to court and assist in litigation support during hearings and trials
- Update case management system as needed
- Perform functions in the Paralegal 2 title as necessary and on a temporary basis
- Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

- Bachelor's degree preferred, or paralegal certificate from an ABA accredited school, or 5+ years of applicable legal experience and satisfactory completion of a comprehensive in-house training course
- Experience or commitment to advocacy for low-income individuals
- Excellent writing, verbal, and organizational skills
- Advanced user of Outlook, OneDrive, Teams, PowerPoint, and SharePoint
- Proficiency in legal research and developing legal arguments
- Proficiency in computer, electronic data management, and file sharing platforms
- E-filing and e-discovery experience desirable
- Ability to work independently and in a team setting
- Ability to multi-task and manage time effectively
- Some knowledge of New York criminal law and procedures desirable
- Proficiency in languages other than English is desirable, but not required

Salary Transparency

The Legal Aid Society offers a generous benefits package, including health insurance, paid vacation, disability, and life insurance. The specific salary offers for this role will be based on candidate qualifications and collectively bargained salary steps for unionized roles. The salary range for this position is $60,000 to $86,577.
