With recent historic discovery reforms transforming the criminal legal system, this role will play a crucial part in ensuring equal access to justice for all.

The Discovery Unit: A Key Component in the Changing Legal Landscape

The recent discovery reforms have brought about significant changes in the criminal justice system. Prosecutors are now required to disclose evidence to the accused and their defense attorneys, and in return, the defense must provide reciprocal discovery to the prosecution. To meet these new requirements and ensure fair representation for our clients, The Legal Aid Society's Criminal Defense Practice has created a Discovery Unit.

Technology: A Vital Tool in Meeting Discovery Requirements

In this role, you will be a crucial part of the platform used to meet the new discovery laws. Your proficiency in computer and electronic data and file sharing software, word processing, and other technology skills will be essential in efficiently processing and transferring electronic discovery materials.

Key Responsibilities: A Diverse and Rewarding Role

As a Discovery Paralegal I, your responsibilities will include:

- Processing and preserving discovery materials and providing notice to assigned attorneys and staff
- Reviewing materials for completeness and compliance
- Gathering reciprocal defense discovery for attorney review
- Assisting attorneys, paralegals, and investigators in accessing discovery materials
- Communicating with the prosecution regarding any issues with discovery materials
- Preparing written reports summarizing information compiled
- Obtaining and copying court and office files
- Serving as a liaison between attorneys and their clients
- Performing other duties as assigned

Requirements: A Strong Foundation for Success

To succeed in this role, you will need:

- A GED or equivalent work experience
- Proficiency in computer and electronic data and file sharing software
- Experience with e-discovery and e-filing (desirable)
- One year of experience in a legal or relevant work environment
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- Ability to work independently and in a team setting
- Knowledge of New York criminal law and procedures
- Proficiency in languages other than English (desirable)
