Law Firm is seeking a Patent Agent or Technical Advisor Law Firm is currently looking for an experienced Patent Agent or Technical Advisor with 1 - 4 years of prior patent prosecution experience to join its Intellectual Property team. This position will be responsible for a variety of complex and sensitive client work that requires a high level of professional capability and skill. The ideal candidate must have a Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, organic chemistry, medicinal chemistry, biochemistry, or chemical engineering, with relevant research experience, or a Master’s or PhD in a related chemistry field. They must also be qualified to sit for the patent bar, and preferably Patent Agent candidates will already be licensed to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office. This is a full-time, exempt position based in any of the Firm’s domestic offices. The salary range for positions based in the New York office is $120,000 to $200,000, depending on experience level. Job Responsibilities: Preparing draft patent applications Drafting responses to communications from the USPTO Assisting in diligence matters (clearance studies and opinion work) Supporting technical aspects of litigation where needed Evaluating and reporting on the technological aspects of inventions and other scientific matters Investigating general and specific technologies as needed Discussing scientific aspects of inventions with clients and inventors Identifying and analyzing complex patent issues and problems and implementing solutions Communicating with, and acting as liaison between, inventors and Patent & Trademark Office in connection with all aspects of the patent application process Communicating face-to-face, e-mail and telephone with staff, clients, and PTO personnel Interacting professionally with clients, lawyers, and employees at all levels Providing information with ordinary courtesy and tact while safeguarding confidentiality Organizing and prioritizing numerous tasks and completing them under time constraints in an efficient and cost-effective manner Staying abreast of technology trends and making recommendations regarding technology needs Undertaking continuing education and remaining abreast of current patent prosecution issues and trends, as required to maintain appropriate accreditation in the field Job Requirements: Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, organic chemistry, medicinal chemistry, biochemistry, or chemical engineering with relevant research experience; or Master’s or PhD in a related chemistry field. Qualified to sit for the patent bar; preferably already licensed to practice before USPTO. Ability to analyze, interpret, and draw inferences from research findings, and prepare reports. Strong investigative and problem resolution skills. Knowledge of principles, procedures, and standards for drafting a range of complex patent documentation in area of expertise. Knowledge of current and emerging developments and trends within area of expertise. Advanced working knowledge of research principles, methods, techniques, and resources. Strong interpersonal skills; ability to work effectively with a wide range of individuals. Ability to organize and prioritize numerous tasks and complete them under time constraints. Advanced oral and written communication skills. Ability to effectively communicate complex factual, technical information. Knowledge of and use of time management software.
