Kaufman & Canoles is Seeking a Civil and Commercial Litigation Paralegal Kaufman & Canoles, a law firm in Virginia Beach, is seeking a qualified full-time Civil and Commercial Litigation Paralegal. This position offers a competitive salary and comprehensive benefits package. Responsibilities: Drafting, editing, and preparing legal documents such as pleadings (complaint, answers, motions, discovery, orders, notices), briefs, memoranda, and summaries. Researching party identity and location and asset searches. Organizing and managing case files, both paper and electronic. Creating hard-bound trial notebooks and exhibits. Obtaining service of process and issuing summons and writs. Managing docket of deadlines and case priorities. Managing document storage and production and handling electronic discovery processes. Professional communications with clients and court personnel. Attending meetings as needed and updating attorneys on status of active cases. Filing documents with the courts. Keeping accurate records of all communication (., phone calls, emails, secure messages), expenses, and case documents. Assisting local counsel for out-of-state cases with discovery and obtaining documents and information from clients. Working on intake of matters with conflicts checks and resolution, engagement agreements, and document evidence intake. Maintaining detailed and accurate daily billable hour records. Goal requirements are to bill 1550 hours per year to client matters and collect two-and-one-half times annual compensation in client fees. Qualifications for the Position: Civil or commercial litigation experience preferred but not required. Associate degree or above is beneficial. Paralegal certification by an ABA approved program is a plus. Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines, shifting priorities as required. Knowledge and mastery of MS Office, (including Word, Outlook, Power Point and Excel), Adobe, and Nuance. Experience with Federal Court filings and systems such as PACER and ECF, experience with State Court filings and systems such as VJEFS and OCRA and working knowledge of the federal Rules of Civil and Appellate Procedure and Supreme Court of Virginia Rules of Civil Procedure is preferred. Experience with post-judgment collections processes (local and foreign judgment docketing, debtors’ interrogatories, garnishments, estate claims, etc.) is beneficial. Experience with case management software a plus. Ability to write professionally and in a business setting. Excellent attitude and team player mentality.
