In this role, the Paralegal will provide vital support for detained and non-detained unaccompanied immigrant children who are seeking protection through various forms of relief, such as asylum and Special Immigrant Juvenile Status (SIJS). This is a hybrid position that will be based in Indianapolis. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: - Give Know Your Rights presentations on the immigration process and legal rights. - Conduct legal screenings with detained and formerly detained children. - Respond to NIJC's non-detained UIC hotline and inbox. - Organize and plan in-person legal services for formerly detained children. - Refer formerly detained children to legal service providers in their region. - Conduct legal and factual research. - Assess cases to determine eligibility. - Conduct interviews with clients and witnesses. - Draft applications, affidavits, letters, and legal pleadings. - Prepare materials for submission to relevant entities. - Review, analyze, and present cases to supervisor. - Stay current on immigration law, policies, and procedures. - Maintain accurate and organized records. - Ensure accuracy and timeliness of reports and work products. - Adhere to ethical standards and maintain client confidentiality. - React to change productively and handle other essential duties as assigned. Qualifications: - Bachelor's degree with experience working with immigrants, refugees, and/or asylum seekers. - At least one year of experience working with these populations preferred. - Must have or be able to obtain a current, valid IN Driver's License. - Must successfully pass a background check. - Fluency in English and Spanish is required. - Excellent writing, editing, organizational, and computer skills. - Ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently and work well under strict deadlines.
