Intake Paralegal Position at Manhattan Legal Services: A Rewarding Opportunity for a Motivated Individual Introduction: Manhattan Legal Services (MLS), a vibrant community-based civil legal advocacy organization based in Manhattan, is seeking a motivated individual to join our team as an Intake Paralegal. This is a full-time position available immediately. About Manhattan Legal Services: As part of Legal Services NYC (LSNYC), the largest provider of free civil legal services for low-income people in the country, Manhattan Legal Services is dedicated to fighting poverty by providing high-quality legal services in various areas such as housing, family law, public benefits, employment, consumer, education, immigration, and disability rights. We also have special units that serve particularly vulnerable populations, including survivors of domestic violence, people living with HIV, and LGBTQ community members. Our organization is committed to working in partnership with community-based organizations to address the root causes of homelessness, hunger, and family disintegration. Responsibilities: As an Intake Paralegal, your main responsibilities will include: - Conducting eligibility screenings of potential clients and obtaining necessary demographic data - Conducting intake and interviews with clients, both virtually and in-person - Providing information, referrals, and advice under the supervision of an attorney - Entering and tracking client information in databases and grants management systems - Opening and closing case files and ensuring compliance with program protocols - Coordinating follow-up services, appointments, referrals, and client correspondences - Assisting case handlers with client-related matters - Maintaining client-related files and documents - Utilizing language-assistance resources, including translation and interpretation services - Answering questions and assisting staff with intake procedures - Maintaining familiarity with internal and external resources for referrals This position may include intake responsibilities for various units within MLS, with a current focus on the Disability Advocacy Unit and HRA MAX SSI work. Qualifications: The ideal candidate for this position is detail-oriented, a good communicator, and has excellent interviewing skills. They should also be able to interact with a diverse range of individuals, including low-income clients, case handlers, and representatives of community organizations. Proficiency in MS Office suite, including Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint, is required. Prior legal services experience is preferred, and a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion is essential. Bilingual candidates who are fluent in Chinese or Spanish are strongly encouraged to apply. An associate's, four-year college, or paralegal degree, or equivalent skills demonstrated by professional or life experience, is required.
