Job Overview:

A law firm seeks an experienced Associate Attorney with a passion for nonprofit law to join its team in Washington, DC. The ideal candidate will have a minimum of four years of legal experience, working independently and collaboratively, with a focus on nonprofit organizations, including §501(c)(3), (c)(4), and (c)(6) entities. This role offers substantial client contact, some business travel, and the opportunity to work in a hybrid setting after a probationary period.

Duties:

  • Provided legal counsel to nonprofit organizations, including researching, drafting legal opinions, and preparing memos.
  • Review and negotiate leases and contracts for nonprofit clients.
  • Assist with setting up new organizations and preparing for tax-exempt status.
  • Attend meetings as general or antitrust counsel.
  • Maintain strong client relationships and manage projects with a high level of independence.
  • Engage in legal analysis and provide practical solutions to clients' legal needs.
  • Potential future business travel as needed.

Requirements:

  • A minimum of 4 years of progressive legal experience.
  • Strong academic background, top 25% of class preferred.
  • Previous experience working with nonprofit or association law is ideal but not required.
  • Ability to work independently and manage legal transactions with minimal oversight.

Education:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an ABA-accredited law school.
  • Must be a member in good standing of at least one state bar, with eligibility to practice in the District of Columbia or the ability to waive in.

Certifications:

  • Licensed to practice law in at least one . jurisdiction, preferably in or eligible to waive into the District of Columbia.

Skills:

  • Excellent legal research, writing, and analytical skills.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and oral, for drafting contracts, memos, and correspondence.
  • Exceptional attention to detail for reviewing and editing documents.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to build and maintain client relationships.
  • Consensus-building and problem-solving abilities, especially in legal analysis.
  • Ability to work effectively within a team-oriented environment while maintaining independent management of projects.
  • Experience with tax and/or benefits-pension law preferred, but not required.
