Job Title: Legal Assistant II-III - Environmental Protection Organization: Office of the Attorney General Department: Environmental Protection Location: Texas-Austin Salary: $4, - $5, (Monthly) Experience: Legal Assistant Certification preferred Schedule: Full-time, 40 hours per week Job Description: The Office of the Attorney General (OAG) is seeking a Legal Assistant II-III to join their Environmental Protection Division. This position will provide support to attorneys in the division by performing tasks such as scheduling court hearings, drafting motions, filing documents with courts, gathering evidence, conducting research, and cite checking court documents and briefs. The Environmental Protection Division focuses on compliance with state environmental regulations, ecological protection, pollution prevention, and defending the State's laws and regulations. About the Organization: The OAG is a dynamic state agency with over 4,000 employees throughout the State of Texas. Responsibilities: • Assemble and prepare evidence, exhibits, affidavits, and documents for use in legal proceedings • Schedule and prioritize attorney caseloads, organize case files, attend initial interviews and depositions, conduct investigations, and prepare chronologies, fact summaries, and witness files • Schedule and draft interrogatories and requests for production, admissions, and information • Review and redact confidential documents for filing with various courts • Meet with clients and others to discuss details of cases • Help respond to public information requests • Prepare synopses, abstracts, or summaries of complex legal issues • Prepare attorneys for meetings with complainants, witnesses, and expert witnesses • Draft and respond to correspondence and opinion requests involving legal interpretations and decisions • Maintain relevant knowledge necessary to perform essential job functions • Attend work regularly in compliance with agreed-upon work schedule • Ensure security and confidentiality of sensitive and/or protected information • Comply with all agency policies and procedures, including those pertaining to ethics and integrity Qualifications: • Legal Assistant II: Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in law or a related field; experience in the following (or closely related) fields may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis: legal assistant • Legal Assistant III: All qualifications for Legal Assistant II, plus one year of full-time experience working as a legal assistant in civil litigation or environmental law (or closely related fields) • Knowledge of legal terminology; state and federal laws, rules, and regulations; research methods and techniques; administrative and court procedures; the legislative process; and public notice requirements • Skill in understanding and processing information, using office equipment, and using a computer and applicable software • Skill in handling multiple tasks, prioritizing, and meeting deadlines • Skill in effective oral and written communication • Skill in exercising sound judgment and effective decision making • Ability to conduct research, draft and interpret legal documents, evaluate and relate findings to cases in question, conduct investigations, and communicate effectively • Ability to receive and respond positively to constructive feedback • Ability to work cooperatively with others in a professional office environment • Ability to provide excellent customer service • Ability to work in person at assigned OAG work location, perform all assigned tasks at designated OAG work space within OAG work location, and perform in-person work with coworkers (., collaborating, training, mentoring) for the entirety of every work week (unless on approved leave) • Ability to arrange for personal transportation for business-related travel • Ability to work more than 40 hours as needed and in compliance with the FLSA • Ability to lift and relocate 30 lbs. • Ability to travel (including overnight travel) up to 20% Preferred Qualifications: • Knowledge of Bluebook and Greenbook citation forms • Legal Assistant Certification How to Apply: Your application for this position may subject you to a criminal background check pursuant to the Texas Government Code.
