Job Title: Deputy General Counsel
Job Responsibilities:
The Deputy General Counsel at the organization plays a crucial role in supporting the organization's legal operations by offering high-quality legal advice and services. This position involves a variety of responsibilities, including:
- Providing a wide range of legal services in multiple specialties as directed by the General Counsel. This includes legal/policy research, policy drafting, contract reviews and negotiations, litigation, internal investigations, and intergovernmental advocacy efforts.
- Acting as the primary legal advisor to the organization's second tier of leadership.
- Leading and managing the legal department's administrative functions, which include assigning, supervising, and evaluating the work of legal staff, selecting and retaining outside counsel, managing budgets, and approving invoices.
- Collaborating with other departments and organizational units to design and implement processes for effective identification, analysis, prioritization, and coordinated responses to legal, risk management, and compliance matters.
- Providing leadership, supervision, direction, and guidance to assigned staff while developing individual and departmental goals and priorities.
- Serving on assigned corporate committees, task forces, and workgroups, such as the President/CEO’s Advisory Council.
- Representing the organization in external relations with partners, agencies, and outside counsel as required.
- Assisting and supporting organization leadership in developing and achieving current and long-range goals and objectives.
- Advising on and participating in the development of corporate policies, procedures, standards, guidelines, and processes.
- Assisting and supporting organization leadership in clarifying and defining the authorities and responsibilities of board members, managers, and other staff.
- Performing other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience Information:
- Minimum Education Qualification: Juris Doctorate (JD) degree from an accredited law school.
- Minimum Experience Qualification:
- Non-supervisory: Eight (8) years of relevant legal experience, including substantial experience in litigation, transactions, healthcare law, employment law, and/or Federal Indian law and self-governance compacting.
- Supervisory: Two (2) years.
- Minimum Certification Qualification: Admitted to practice before the Alaska State, Federal District, and other appropriate courts.
- Preferred Experience Qualification:
- Three (3) years of experience or specialized study in Federal Indian law and self-governance.
- Significant experience in private or public sector law practice, preferably representing Tribal clients or complex healthcare organizations.
- Additional Requirements: Understanding of Alaska Native or American Indian cultures.
Salary Information:
The salary range for the Deputy General Counsel position is between USD 203, and 279,.
