Assistant General Counsel

Job Title: Assistant General Counsel

Job Responsibilities:
The Assistant General Counsel at Company is tasked with providing comprehensive legal guidance and representation on a wide variety of legal matters. These include administrative and legal proceedings, litigation, and employment law. Key responsibilities entail:

- Serving as lead counsel in litigation cases.
- Advising the Human Resources department on employment-related issues.
- Assisting in inquiries and investigations from the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), Department of Labor (DOL), and Department of Justice (DOJ).
- Reviewing, drafting, and analyzing legal documents.
- Conducting legal and factual research.
- Supporting the development and implementation of university policies and procedures.
- Managing subpoenas and public records requests.
- Assisting with grievance processes.
- Handling higher education legal matters, including those related to Title IX, Clery Act, and the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), under the direction of the Vice President and General Counsel.

Education and Experience Information:
Minimum Qualifications:
- A Bachelor’s degree (BA/BS) and a Juris Doctor (JD) from an ABA-accredited law school, completed by the date of application.
- At least three years of successful experience as a practicing attorney.
- Membership in good standing of the South Dakota Bar, or licensure with the South Dakota Bar within 12 months of hire.
- Demonstrated strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
- Strong legal research, analytical, and writing skills.
- Ability to digest state and federal requirements and findings into cohesive and succinct documents.
- Strong communication skills with various constituencies, coupled with the ability to manage a significant caseload across multiple areas of law.
- Strict adherence to deadlines and independent work capability.
- Strong organizational and project management skills, with proficiency in MS Office and the ability to use various office equipment and software.
- A valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain one within 30 days of employment.

Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in practicing law in higher education, government practice, compliance, litigation, administrative or civil actions, employment, or related areas.

Salary Information:
The minimum starting salary for the Assistant General Counsel is $120,000, commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Working Conditions:
- The position requires travel, overnight stays, and sometimes working on weekends or holidays.
- The working hours are typically from 8 . to 5 . on weekdays.
- The role is performed primarily in an office environment but may involve changing temperatures and exposure to dust depending on case facts.
