Job Title: Assistant University Counsel
Job Responsibilities:
The Assistant University Counsel at a reputed firm is responsible for handling a wide array of legal matters. These include general business transactions, reviewing and completing significant purchases and vendor contracts, managing grant and government contracts, overseeing technology transfer and intellectual property matters, and forming legal entities with associated document drafting and negotiation. The role also involves addressing charitable giving and tax matters, ensuring the university receives the expected outcomes from transactions, and mitigating future liabilities from long-term contractual relationships. While the primary focus is on transactional matters, candidates with legal experience in higher education, such as litigation or regulatory affairs, will also be considered. Additional duties include advising administrative departments and academic units on business matters, intellectual property issues, and related disputes, as well as conducting and developing training in legal specialty areas. The Assistant University Counsel is expected to maintain strong relationships with various departments, such as Facilities Management, Project Delivery, and Purchasing, and provide legal services and assistance as assigned by University Counsel.
Education and Experience Information:
- A Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school with high academic achievement is required.
- Admission to at least one state bar, with the ability to become licensed in Pennsylvania within one year of employment notification.
- A minimum of three years of practice experience in handling a variety of business matters and/or related disputes.
- A list of representative business matters handled as primary or lead counsel is required.
- Preferred experience includes providing legal advice and counsel at or to an institution of higher education.
Required Skills and Abilities:
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to draft, negotiate, and review a wide variety of agreements.
- Capability to manage ongoing construction projects and focus on the university's building plans.
- Skills in advising departments/units on the review and interpretation of university policies and procedures.
- Ability to provide other legal services and assistance as assigned by University Counsel.
Salary Information:
The salary range for the Assistant University Counsel position is $120,000 - $135,000. When determining the salary, a variety of factors are considered, including job duties, the applicant’s education and experience, internal equity considerations, department budget, and funding source.
