Job Title: AVP, Legal Counsel - Claims Counsel

Job Responsibilities:
The Assistant Vice President (AVP) & Legal Counsel role is pivotal within the Dedicated Legal Resource (DLR) team at the company. This position involves providing primary legal counsel to the company's Benefits Operations teams across all . sites and product lines. The AVP & Counsel is expected to be a central component of the DLR team, acting as an advisor to Benefit Operations staff and leadership on policy-related questions, issues, and trends. The role requires collaboration with colleagues in various functions across the enterprise, offering an excellent opportunity to learn about all aspects of the business, enhance legal and leadership skills, and develop an industry-wide perspective.

The principal duties and responsibilities include:
- Partnering with Benefits Operations to identify and address claim-related legal issues, providing real-time legal guidance on a wide variety of products and issues.
- Coordinating with Benefits Operations leadership and resource partners to support and reinforce key messages and observations.
- Monitoring the external environment to identify and address legal trends.
- Facilitating communication and information sharing between the front and back ends of the business.
- Analyzing and formulating positions on claims consistent with applicable case law, legislation, and regulations.
- Incorporating and applying federal and state laws and regulations, including ERISA, insurance laws and regulations, and employee benefit laws affecting insurance, as well as new and emerging areas of the law such as e-commerce and privacy, to business plans and objectives.
- Providing support to designated business teams, managing workflow from and relationship with all levels of employees and management for such teams.
- Defending company interests in litigation and disputed matters; assisting and supervising outside counsel.
- Keeping the legal management team apprised of and soliciting their input as appropriate on significant legal issues.
- Identifying law-related training needs; developing and delivering training through various mechanisms including written materials, classroom, and staff presentations.
- Ensuring that all business clients give appropriate attention to the Code of Conduct and Legality Policy.
- Actively participating in the development of support staff (paralegals).

Education and Experience Information:
The job specifications for the AVP & Legal Counsel position include:
- A Juris Doctor (.) degree plus admission to practice law in at least one jurisdiction.
- Knowledge of the state and federal regulatory environment, including state filing and compliance requirements and processes, is preferred.
- Demonstrated leadership qualities, including the ability to build effective working relationships with key constituents across the enterprise.
- Insurance product knowledge is preferred.
- Strong leadership skills, including strategic planning and project management, are preferred.
- Strong people and change management skills are preferred.
- The ability to understand multiple technology applications is preferred.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Salary Information:
The base salary range for applicants for this position is between $133, and $274,. Actual pay will be based on skill, geographical location, and experience. Additionally, the company offers a portfolio of competitive and comprehensive benefits and rewards, including healthcare benefits (health, vision, dental), insurance benefits (short & long-term disability), performance-based incentive plans, paid time off, and a 401(k) retirement plan with an employer match up to 5% and an additional % contribution whether you contribute to the plan or not. All benefits are subject to the terms and conditions of individual plans.
