Current Employee Mr. San Francisco

What would you, or others, like to see changed at employer?
The world has changed a lot in just the last couple of years and it's a different landscape out there, I think the firm would be much better served by adapting to the future instead of behind held back by the past.

What were the things that you liked most about this employer?
It has been there for a while, you get a sense of history just walking into their offices, and working there I know that they aren't new and that they have survived the ups and downs every firm has to go through. A low of experienced as a firm that has helped me in my career.

What did you not like about this institution?
It can feel sometimes stuffy or old-fashioned, they're used to doing things their own way and it's not always easy to change that. I know that sometimes suggestions I have made have met with resistance.

Overview

Discover the Excitement of Working at Hirschler Fleischer, a Professional Corporation

Hirschler Fleischer, a Professional Corporation, is not your typical law firm. Founded by Major Edward S. Hirschler and Lieutenant Alan Fleischer in 1945, this Richmond-based firm has a rich history and a unique approach to the practice of law. With a focus on entrepreneurial spirit and a commitment to diversity, Hirschler Fleischer offers an exciting and dynamic environment for attorneys and staff alike.

From its humble beginnings, Hirschler Fleischer has grown into one of the finest law firms in Virginia. The founders, both veterans of World War II, met by chance and decided to share an office to save on expenses. This partnership laid the foundation for the firm's success. In the early years, legal work was scarce, so Hirschler and Fleischer took matters into their own hands and created their own businesses, including insurance companies and a bank. This entrepreneurial spirit has remained a defining characteristic of the firm throughout its history.

Today, Hirschler Fleischer is known for its expertise in real estate, business, and litigation. The firm has expanded steadily over the years, but unlike many other firms, it has not grown through mergers. Instead, Hirschler Fleischer has carefully selected top talent from law schools and other practices, ensuring that only the best and brightest join their ranks. The firm now operates with 70 attorneys and a comparable number of staff.

One of the firm's greatest strengths is its commitment to diversity. Hirschler Fleischer prides itself on being a meritocracy, where individuals are judged on their skills and performance, rather than their background or connections. This inclusive approach has attracted a diverse group of attorneys and staff, who bring a wide range of perspectives and experiences to the firm. "We're not all native Richmonders or native Virginians," says Rick Witthoefft, past president of the Richmond Bar Association. "In terms of race, religion, personality, and cultural background, we are a diverse group."

For attorneys and staff, working at Hirschler Fleischer offers numerous benefits. The firm encourages an entrepreneurial mindset, allowing attorneys to develop new practice areas and pursue their passions. This freedom to innovate has led to many success stories within the firm. Additionally, Hirschler Fleischer provides a supportive and collaborative work environment, where individuals are given the opportunity to grow and excel. "Here, you are judged on your merits and performance. You are responsible for your success," says Executive Vice President Mike Terry.

Joining Hirschler Fleischer means becoming part of a team that values excellence, diversity, and innovation. Attorneys and staff have the opportunity to work on challenging and high-profile cases, gaining valuable experience and honing their skills. The firm's reputation for excellence in real estate, business, and litigation ensures that every day brings new and exciting opportunities.

In conclusion, Hirschler Fleischer, a Professional Corporation, offers an exciting and dynamic environment for attorneys and staff. With a rich history rooted in entrepreneurial spirit and a commitment to diversity, the firm provides a unique and rewarding experience for those who join its ranks. From the opportunity to develop new practice areas to the chance to work on high-profile cases, Hirschler Fleischer offers a platform for growth and success. Summer Associate Program

Our program exposes our summer clerks to our daily practice. Summer clerks can expect to undertake projects in a variety of areas and to play active and substantive roles in the work they perform. Summer clerks make valuable contributions to the work we do for our clients; we do not use summer clerks for fictional "make-work" projects. Preparing for and attending trials, depositions, arbitrations, mediations, negotiations, business transactions, real estate closings, zoning hearings, and client meetings, as well as drafting pleadings and transactional documents are actual examples of the varied activities in which summer clerks can expect to participate. We invite summer clerks to attend our periodic section meetings, at which attorneys may address that section's business or substantive topics of interest. Our Associates Committee, comprised entirely of associates, also meets periodically with the associates of the firm, and our summer clerks are invited to attend those meetings as well. Our objective is to provide as many opportunities as possible for our summer clerks to experience both our practice and our culture.
