The attorneys and staff at McGuireWoods LLP can't stop talking about how wonderful it is to work there, and I've been impressed by the firm's kindness to its clients.
Our interactions with Courney McHugh have consistently been positive - they are professional, asked great questions and were quick to follow up.

Perhaps look into seeing if the workload can be changed up a bit to keep employees from getting bored and giving up."

The pay here is generous for the work that is required of people here and the experience of the people.

The work here tends to be kind of tedious and drags out forever with no end in sight. Even if you finish it the next day will be just like the previous.

Offer more opportunities for advancement and training for management.

This is a great place to learn about the practice of law. The benefits and attorneys are great.

There are not many opportunities to move up in the organization. Management needs more training.

As the firm continues to grow larger, McGuireWoods has an extremely stringent hiring process. In general, it recruits only from the top one-third of the graduating class from select law schools. In addition to academic performance at both graduate and undergraduate levels, the firm considers pervious work experience and a demonstrated passion for the law.

Here are some of the skills that the firm looks for in prospective hires:

Excellent academic performance
Demonstrated leadership potential
Prior relevant work experience
Law school extracurricular involvement
Strong desire and drive to succeed
Ability and willingness to take up challenges

Pro bono

An important core value of McGuireWoods is the firm's commitment to the communities around its offices. The firm's attorneys believe that it is not sufficient for them to just do their work and go home at the end of the workday; they are strongly committed to serving the communities in which the live and work. The firm also provides full credit of the pro bono hours as billable hours to its attorneys, which further ensures that nothing detracts its attorneys from their commitment to the communities they serve.

As part of the firm's commitment to the communities, McGuireWoods handles a significant amount of pro bono work including battered spouse representations, child support enforcement prosecutions, court-appointed criminal defense, death penalty cases, housing law cases, and wills and powers of attorney. The firm provides free legal services and general counseling on a wide variety of legal issues to several local non-profit groups, including The Children's Law Center.

Summer associate program

McGuireWoods conducts interviews at several law schools for the selection of 2L students for its Summer Associate Program. The Recruiting Committee takes into consideration the students' geographic preferences and practice areas of interest, along with academic performance and extracurricular activities, while reviewing the applications and usually informs the selected students of the decision within two weeks of the interview.

As a summer associate at McGuireWoods, one is encouraged to take up assignments related to a wide range of practice areas. The assigning attorneys typically evaluate a summer associate's assignment on the following criteria:

understanding of projects

analysis and judgment

quality of legal reasoning

writing skills

interaction with the attorneys on project teams

At the end of the program, the Recruiting Committee reviews all the evaluations conducted by the supervising attorneys and the comments given by these attorneys in order to make offer determinations. These offers are typically made for a specific office, taking into consideration the summer associate's preferences for location and practice area.
