Hiring Criteria

Dentons follows the set of hiring criteria outlined below.

SNR Denton looks for well-rounded candidates who have demonstrated excellent academic and personal achievements in law school, college and elsewhere. Strong interpersonal and leadership skills are also important qualities. The firm recruits through campus recruitment's as well as job fairs. It visited 9 law schools for campus placements, while it attended one job fair during the year 2011.

Pro bono

SNR Denton has a full-time partner devoted to developing and overseeing pro bono opportunities. The associates are required to perform a minimum of 50 pro bono hours, and the firm will credit up to 100 pro bono hours automatically towards the billable hours requirement and bonus consideration. Additionally, the firm will credit more pro bono hours if they are formally approved by the firm's Pro Bono Committee. In 2010, 100 % of associates at the firm performed pro bono work, with associates averaging 85 hours each. The firm represents disabled persons or poor persons in class actions intended to secure their rights, it also represents a number of prisoners in civil rights on account of excessive force cases or cases concerning poor prison conditions. SNR Denton promotes a professional environment that attracts, retains and promotes lawyers and staff of all backgrounds, regardless of any group characteristic, such as race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, religious affiliation, age, disability, gender identity or social perspective. "For us, inclusiveness is a priority," the firm writes on its website. Employment and advancement at the firm are based on the individual's achievement, performance, ability, dedication, professionalism, potential for promotion, and Firm needs and not on the basis of discriminatory factors.

Summer associate program

Most of SNR Denton's offices offer summer associate programs. The work conditions are like a free-market system that is monitored by a summer work coordinator. Summer associates are expected to complete an average of 10 assignments during the eight-week summer program, and typically they spend about seven hours a day on billable work. On some occasions, summer associates even travel to other offices to assist with cases. Summer associates are paired with a mentor and given feedback on work by assigning attorneys. Also, SNR Denton provides summer associates access to the regular training offered to full-time associates, as well as training specifically for the summer class such as memo writing and professional development. The firm does not require rigid specializations and many attorneys combine multiple areas of expertise and continue to focus on a specific area. An attorney in each practice area typically assigns work to associates.

Working for the Dentons

SNR Denton has a minimum billable hours requirement of 2,000 hours in most offices. The firm offers, a two-tier partnership structure. Associates are considered for non-equity partner after five years and for equity partnership after eight years. The firm has collegial and supportive atmosphere, making the firm an international firm in its true sense. Also, flexibility in office hours is a plus for the firm. However, lack of transparency of firm leadership and limited profile and branding of the firm act as downers. SNR Denton offers 17-weeks of paid maternity leave, including four weeks at half pay. New fathers and adoptive parents are given four weeks at full pay and an additional four weeks at half pay if they are the primary caregivers.
