More associates should be made partner. Also, the firm should add diverse staff and improve the working conditions for its staff. For those who thrive in such an environment, they may do quite well here.

You will always be busy here. You will not be without work to do. So it's up to you to produce the billable hours. You should be prepared to get to work from the first minutes of your employment.

There are few who will want to help you here. You cannot go to others for answers to questions you may need answered, because people are busy and not always friendly to new associates.

Keller and Heckman's pro bono program strives to improve the quality of life for those at an economic disadvantage through partnerships with public interest organizations in the DC area. For example, members of the firm help staff the District of Columbia Bar Pro Bono Program Advice and Referral Clinic. Each quarter, our attorneys with assistance from our paralegals, and professional staff members provide legal consultations and referrals to residents of Washington's Anacostia neighborhood.

We also assist clients referred to us by the American Association of Retired Persons Legal Counsel for the Elderly (LCE). LCE provides free legal services and advocacy for Washington, DC residents, age 60 and older. In particular, our lawyers assist LCE clients with wills and other end of life planning, as well as representation in debt collection matters.

Summer associate program

Our summer program is a critical component in Keller and Heckman's recruitment process for new lawyers. It is designed to acquaint students with the firm's practice and to provide law students an opportunity to gain experience in as broad a range of practice areas as possible.

Summer associates generally rotate through two practice areas that interest them most, and receive assignments and direction from both partners and associates within those practices. Among the practice areas from which summer associates may choose are the following: Environmental, Food and Drug, Litigation, and Employment/Workplace Safety and Health. From time to time, summer associates also may have the opportunity to rotate through our Telecommunications practice.
