Candidates applying to Arnold & Porter need to demonstrate a consistently high academic background. The firm expects candidates to have at least a 2.1 degree, AAB at A level or equivalent, and looks for well rounded individuals who can demonstrate their participation in a range of extracurricular activities and achievements.

Apart from academic excellence, the firm also looks into the candidate's professionally related activities and experiences of participation in law review, journal or clinical legal work. Pro bono

Arnold & Porter LLP has one of the world's leading law firm pro bono programs. Doing pro bono work has been a core value of Arnold & Porter since the firm's founding in 1946. The firm does not cower away from representing unpopular clients as is evident from their efforts to help an Islamic group build a mosque in a New Jersey town despite bitter opposition.

Arnold & Porter is one of a small number of firms whose attorneys consistently average more than 100 hours per year of pro bono work. The firm and its lawyers have won dozens of awards in recent years, including the American Bar Association's prestigious "Pro Bono Publico" award.

Arnold & Porter has many landmark pro bono cases that have impacted communities positively. Its representation of mentally ill prisoners seeking appropriate treatment at the notorious "Angola Prison Farm" in Louisiana, and lawsuit against a "mail order brides" agency that brought a young woman to the United States and matched her with a physically abusive man-a case that led to federal legislation brings these agencies under government regulation.

It is not that the firm handles only high impact cases, its cases also involve the death penalty, political asylum, election reform, and international human rights, among many other areas. It has also represented many disadvantaged individuals, such as families facing eviction, women who have been the victims of brutal domestic violence, and people who have been wrongfully denied government benefits. The firm's work covers the full range of the firm's lawyers' skills, including transactional work and counseling for non-profits and non-governmental organizations.

The firm contributes 5 percent of its total billable work to pro bono work.

  • On June 21, the California Supreme Court issued a decision in a case of major importance to the banking industry: Parks v MBNA America Bank, N.A.
