Overview

All law firms seek to serve clients effectively. Some do it more consistently than others. Jones Day ranked highly in the BTI Consulting Group's 2014 "Client Service A-Team" ranking, which identifies the top 30 law firms for client service through a national survey of corporate counsel. "Blazing the trail for superior client service delivery, Jones Day earns Best of the Best status in 9 key activities, including Understanding the Client's Business and Helping to Advise on Business Issues—where Jones Day has earned top honors for an impressive 9 consecutive years." Jones Day has also ranked in the Top 10 every year since 2000 in the Corporate Board Member/FTI Consulting annual survey of the best corporate law firms. These are just two indications that our focus on serving our clients' needs, and not on the financial metrics that are so commonly used today to measure law firm performance, is recognized by our clients, who reward us with more opportunities to help them meet their interests. Jones Day is organized as a true partnership, and it operates as such; we are not an LLP or LLC or some other quasi-corporate entity. We see ourselves as a global legal institution based on a set of principles to which a large number of men and women can commit – principles that have a social purpose and permanence, that transcend individual interests. While this may well be a more sociological description than you would see on most law firm web sites, and no doubt is subject to a skeptical reaction from many when they first read or hear it, we believe it accurately describes one important aspect of what makes Jones Day the client service organization that it is.

Hiring Criteria

Jones Day. follows the set of hiring criteria outlined below.

Jones Day has the second-highest number of employees in a U.S. law firm. Perhaps the best evidence that the firms hiring process works fairly and effectively is the very small number of Jones Day partners who leave for other peer firms.

Rooted in strong core values, it is considered as one of the best places in the world for associates to begin their careers. The company puts employee interest and respects the value they bring to the firm. It did not layoff any worker during the recent recession and the continuing economic crisis.

Unlike most other firms, Jones Day puts more emphasis on the personal interview and the qualities and attributes of the job applicant rather than on the law school from which he or she may have graduated. The pay is good, and the training and learning on the job is exceptional.

Apart from legal competence, the firm expects it candidates to have strong moral values of integrity, simple honesty in all dealings and accepting personal responsibility.

Pro bono

Jones Day has a long history of and commitment to pro bono work, public service, and community involvement in all of their locations around the world. Because of that commitment, pro bono and public service matters undertaken by Jones Day are provided with the same level of attention and professional dedication that they provide to those matters undertaken on behalf of paying clients. The work performed on approved pro bono matters is given the same weight and consideration as client billable work for the purposes of evaluating the lawyers' overall professional development and potential.

The firm's pro bono commitments range from complex litigation matters with precedential impact to representing needy individuals in local courts and administrative tribunals. While the legal issues advanced are varied, the firm has made a particular effort to secure the rights of individuals to affordable and decent housing and to advance the rights of children with respect to education.

Jones Day also provides critical services to nonprofit organizations worldwide that are committed to making a difference in areas such as economic development, women's rights, health care, and the protection of children. In addition, the firm has made a dedicated effort to advance the rule of law in countries around the world, most recently in Afghanistan.

Each of their offices has a designated partner-in-charge of pro bono to further develop the reach of activities and encourage the participation of Jones Day lawyers and staff. They also have a full-time, firm wide Partner-in-Charge of pro bono, who oversees and directs pro bono efforts worldwide.
