Overview

It’s unlikely Frank F. Dinsmore could have envisioned the journey he would begin when he opened a small law office on Cincinnati’s Walnut Street in 1897, six years after graduating with honors from Cincinnati Law School.

Advice to law firm management: Work with the employees schedules more and create flexible work arrangements for those who want to have a life outside of the legal industry.

Pros: This is a very large firm with over twenty offices and growing. It's well respected and has an excellent reputation. The pay and the benefits are both excellent for people who produce good work. There is work in so many different areas and you can gain a lot of experience here.

Cons: If you're not one of the top people you are very often ignored. They expect you to be on call full time and there really is no balance at all between work and your life outside of work. It's very demanding time wise.

Advice to law firm management: Management needs to treat their employees better and not encourage anyone in a position of power to talk down to those beneath them.

Pros: There is great amount of growth and advancement opportunities at this firm. There are really good benefits that come along with the heavy workload. Even with that said, I never found myself irritated or flustered. It's always interesting work and with such a big staff, I was never bored.

Cons: There are some serious issues at this firm when it comes to bullying. I've observed lots of trash talk and harsh gossip talked behind people's back. Unfortunately, the upper management chimes in on the bullying of their staff members and goes along with it. Along with bullying, there's a lot of inappropriate behavior committed by attorneys.

Diversity

We embrace a culture that allows all of our attorneys to succeed as themselves within a supportive and resourceful environment that emphasizes personal service to all of our clients. There are no round pegs being forced into square holes here. We celebrate the benefits of utilizing the unique talents, backgrounds and interests of all of our attorneys to better serve the varied perspectives and needs of our clients and the communities that we serve.

Our lawyers are encouraged to become leaders in our fields of practice and in our communities, drawing from the combined experiences to provide efficient and effective solutions for both. I personally believe that our firm is enriched continually by new ideas and we welcome input and suggestions from everyone within the Dinsmore family on matters critical to the operation of the firm and our constant quest to continually improve the service that we provide to our clients.

Summer associate program

Our summer program gives you an opportunity to gain practical legal experience and become acquainted with the firm and our practice. We make concerted efforts in all our locations to show summer associates what it is like to be a Dinsmore attorney.

You can spend your entire summer experience with Dinsmore, but we will accommodate second year students who wish to spend part of the summer with us and part with another firm. Students are required to spend a minimum of six weeks with our firm; we prefer they spend the first half of their summer at Dinsmore.

The work performed by summer associates is not confined to legal research and drafting of memoranda. As much as possible, summer associates are encouraged to visit the courts; assist in the preparation of briefs, pleadings and other legal documents; attend depositions; participate in closings; and go to conferences with clients and other attorneys. We believe this enables the summer associates to better understand the practice of law at the firm and gives them a realistic view of legal practice in general.
