Advice to law firm management: Keep employees around that want to keep working here and enjoying what a great firm this is to work at. This will make things great.

Pros: I really like how well everyone works together at this firm and how nice it is all together. It is an enjoyable place to be around.

Cons: I had to leave as I received an offer from another company and this firm did not want to match the offer or do anything about that.

Advice to law firm management: Work hard and make yourself noticed, otherwise you may not be able to get desired promotions. As there are many attorneys, it is sometimes hard to please them. You need to be good at it.

Pros: This firm provided good training and a diverse industry learning experience. The employees are generally friendly and fun to work with. The work load was manageable and I was able to maintain good work-life balance. I was privileged to work with a special group attorney whose teaching will always help me. Overall a very enjoyable time here, everyone is very inclusive and helpful.

Cons: The firm is very work focused in its outlook and does not bear any leniency. To survive at this firm one need to be very much dynamic and adaptive. Lack of autonomy provided to junior staff.

  • The firm assisted Canadian aerospace and defense company on US export control issues and compliance.
  • The firm on behalf of a Canadian aerospace company was actively involved in a successful challenge to Brazil's export financing program for regional aircraft at both the panel and appellate body stages.
  • Steptoe has represented various Latin American governments in substantial arbitrations, including acting as counsel to the Government of Ecuador in the estimated $1.2 billion project financing of the nation's largest crude oil pipeline.
  • Steptoe attorneys also counselled a Caribbean government in its negotiations with an independent power producer involving $770 million of financing, which became solvent.
  • Steptoe acted as counsel for a Latin American government's electricity agency in its $775 million International Chamber of Commerce arbitration in Mexico City, Mexico, against an electric company in a dispute involving power generation facilities.

Summer associate program


The firm considers its summer associate program to be crucial to its recruitment efforts and look to the summer associates becoming long-term permanent employees of the firm. . A significant portion of its associate hiring each year comes from the summer associate group of previous years, and a very high percentage of its former summer associates seek to further their careers at the firm.

Summer associate assignments are designed to provide a variety of substantive work and the broadest possible exposure to its lawyers. Work preference of summer associates is given considerable importance and to ensure that assignments match with the summer associates choices most of the projects are chosen from an on-line database that contains a variety of assignments from all areas of the practice. The remaining projects are assigned with the goal of exposing summer associates to the diversity of the firm's practice and meeting the firm's needs.

Summer Associates are encouraged to attend trials, arguments, depositions, negotiations, and other legal activities in which the firm is involved.

The firm designs its programs with the intent that the summer associate returns a better and more enlightened lawyer after his summer stint with the firm. The summer associate's work is carefully evaluated and the summer associate's advisor provides a comprehensive review of the student's first project before the work product is submitted. The first and all subsequent assignments are discussed with the summer associate by at least one of the attorneys who supervised the project.

It is not all work and the firm arranges many social events where summer associates get to know their colleagues, firm attorneys and other people in a fun-filled collegial environment.
