Advice to law firm management: Before having attorneys assign complex projects to paralegals, such as those where legal research is required, consider having the paralegal complete several mock assignments, to ensure the knowledge to perform the task satisfactorily is there. Cite-checking with the bluebook can be assignned more freely, but legal research requires a skill that needs to be built over time.

Pros: Opportunity to work of various types of cases, learn many aspects of paralegal work through training and assignments, and be able to discuss backgroud of cases with associates and partners.

Cons: If work becomes scarce (happened to me when many attorneys left the firm several years ago), you might be assigned a document review or inventory/document storage project and start wondering about the stability of your position. If this happens, you will feel it necessary to directly ask attorneys or more senior paralegals about projects you can do or help with, in order to show you're contributing to the firm.

Favorite Things About this Firm: Many learning opportunities, direct interaction with all levels of attorneys, mostly casual/open door environment, lunch or happy hour drinks provided after prevailing in a large case or after a busy period. If you start working on a contractual basis and do good work/show initiative, you may be hired on directly, as I was.

Advice to law firm management: Quicker upward pace in advancing oneself is needed. Great environment, but pushing forward as far as management needs to happen.

Pros: A great place to work, love most of the people here. Great to work with and great energy all around. Team focused and cross training is there.

Cons: I was hard to move beyond what I was brought in for. It took much more time than I thought is should have. The path forward isn't quick.

Our government relations team draws on the experience of former members of the US Senate and House and former senior representatives of the principal US executive and legislative bodies. Our intellectual property practice represents clients across a wide range of industries in patent litigation and prosecution as well as in trademark, copyright, and licensing matters. Our lawyers rely on strong technical backgrounds in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, chemistry, biochemistry, and materials science.
