Job Title: Temporary Family Law Attorney
Job Responsibilities:
Attorneys in this position will work within the Family Unit Restraining Order Project, providing holistic, client-centered legal advocacy for domestic violence survivors seeking court protection. The role involves staffing one of the organization's court offices located in either Bridgeport or Stamford Superior Court. Key responsibilities include:
- Assisting victims and survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, or other crimes in completing applications for Ex Parte Temporary Restraining Orders.
- Advising self-represented parties as they navigate the court restraining order process.
- Providing legal representation at court hearings when appropriate.
- Engaging in training on the application process, ancillary issues, and representing trauma victims in restraining order court hearings.
- Participating in training on screening applicants and other internal procedures of the organization.
- Attending local office meetings, statewide trainings, and unit meetings.
Education and Experience Information:
Candidates must demonstrate a deep and committed advocacy on behalf of low-income, vulnerable, and marginalized communities, aligning with the mission, vision, goals, and values of the organization. The required qualifications include:
- A minimum of two years’ experience in the practice of family law or domestic violence advocacy.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to write persuasively and communicate effectively with diverse populations.
- A demonstrated ability to collaborate closely with colleagues and work independently when necessary.
- Creativity and flexibility in solving problems and meeting challenges.
- Admission to the Connecticut Bar or having passed the Connecticut Bar Exam with a willingness to be sworn in immediately.
- Knowledge and experience in Connecticut court practice.
