Job Title: Assistant State Public Defender
Job Responsibilities:
The Assistant State Public Defender (ASPD) is responsible for providing legal representation at the circuit court level, covering a variety of cases including but not limited to criminal, civil commitment, protective placement, revocation of conditional liberty, sexually violent offender commitment, and termination of parental rights. The role involves:
- Conducting litigation and hearings.
- Negotiating on behalf of clients.
- Preparing and working with legal documents, such as legal pleadings, motions, and briefs.
- Managing time effectively to meet strict caseload deadlines.
- Interacting professionally with diverse groups, including office staff, clients, opposing counsel, and courts.
Education and Experience Information:
A minimally qualified candidate for the ASPD position must have graduated from or be close to graduating from an accredited law school and must be working towards admission to the Wisconsin Bar within the next year. The candidate must be licensed to practice law in the State of Wisconsin before their start date. The position requires:
- Education and/or training in providing legal representation and preparing legal documents.
- Time management skills and the ability to meet hard deadlines.
- The ability to interact professionally with diverse groups.
In addition, well-qualified applicants will have experience in:

Salary Information:
The starting salary for the Assistant State Public Defender role ranges from to per hour, translating to an annual salary of $76, to $117,, depending on qualifications.
