Job Responsibilities:
- Gain experience in the practice of law and oral advocacy by working in prosecutors’ offices.
- Handle in-court assignments typically handled by assistant prosecutors, including plea negotiations, bench trials, formal hearings, and case reviews.
- Represent the People of the State of Michigan in court proceedings pursuant to Michigan Court Rule .
- Engage in various family court proceedings and potentially prepare and conduct one or more jury trials during the summer.
- Attend a four-day training and orientation to learn about the duties and responsibilities of prosecutors and receive an intensive overview of legal subjects and trial advocacy.
Education and Experience Information:
- Applicants must be law students who have completed at least 40 credit hours of law school by May 8, 2026, and be in good standing.
- Students should have completed their second year of law school prior to the start of the internship in May 2026.
- Applicants must have at least one semester (or term) of law school remaining after completion of the internship.
- Preference is given to candidates who have completed courses in criminal law, criminal procedure, and evidence by May 2026.
- Applicants must be Michigan residents or demonstrate an intent to practice in Michigan upon graduation.
- An interest in the criminal justice system, specifically the field of prosecution, is required.
Salary Information:
- Interns receive a salary of $9, for 11 weeks of work, based on a 40-hour workweek at a rate of per hour.
- Intern positions are at-will, and each intern serves at the pleasure of the host county prosecutor.
Additional Information:
- The Prosecuting Attorneys Coordinating Council (PACC) administers the program and is responsible for training, informational services, and technical assistance to Michigan’s 83 county prosecutors and their staff.
- PACC’s executive staff will interview students and recommend intern candidates to each host county prosecutor, who will make the final hiring decision.
- Interns must attend a mandatory training session in the Lansing area in May 2026, which will not be compensated, but training costs, including meals and materials, are covered. Lodging is provided for interns living more than 50 miles from the training area.
- The program offers approximately 20 internships each summer at various locations across the state, and applicants are encouraged to be flexible regarding geographic location to improve their chances of selection.
- Application deadline for direct applicants is September 26, 2025, and those interviewing through on-campus interviews must comply with school deadlines.
- Required application materials include a cover letter, resume, pre-interview survey, law school transcript (unofficial is acceptable), and a writing sample.
