Job Title: Law Clerk 2025 - 2026

Job Responsibilities:
As a law clerk within the **Members Only**, your primary responsibilities will vary depending on the court division you are assigned to. Here is an overview of the duties across different divisions:

1. Supreme Court Law Clerks:
- Work with justices on complex cases involving intricate legal issues.
- Perform legal research, prepare written memoranda on novel legal issues, and assist justices in opinion preparation.

2. Appellate Division Law Clerks:
- Conduct research, analyze legal data, prepare legal memoranda, process emergent motion applications, and proofread published opinions.
- Prepare weekly memos, edit opinions, handle emergent applications, and assist judges with additional research projects.

3. Trial Court Law Clerks:
- Gain practical experience by observing judicial proceedings and attending conferences with attorneys and judges.
- Receive mediation training, mediate small claims cases, and summarize information for judges.

4. Tax Court Law Clerks:
- Perform duties similar to Appellate Division and trial courts but do not mediate cases.
- Review and process motions, conduct legal research, draft legal documents, manage the motion calendar, and communicate with litigants and attorneys.

5. Assignment Judge Law Clerks:
- Learn all aspects of court administration and assist with processing emergent motions.
- Conduct research, prepare legal memos, manage the judge’s docket, and communicate regularly with counsel and staff.

6. Family Division Law Clerks:
- Conduct legal research, assist with remote proceedings, communicate with litigants, draft opinions and orders, and handle emergent applications.

7. Civil Division Law Clerks:
- Prepare bench memoranda, review pre-trial memoranda, perform legal research, draft legal orders, manage the motion calendar, and assist with case management functions.

8. Criminal Division Law Clerks:
- Conduct legal research, assist in drafting jury instructions and legal opinions, manage the motion calendar, and perform case management functions.

9. General Equity (Chancery) Law Clerks:
- Conduct legal research on substantive and procedural matters, prepare bench memoranda, draft orders, interact with counsel and litigants, and assist in processing emergent applications.

Education and Experience Information:
- Applicants must have graduated from a law school approved by the American Bar Association (ABA) by the time of their law clerk appointment.
- The program is intended for recent law school graduates, defined as graduating within the last four years.
- Excellent writing and analytical skills are essential.
- It is helpful to have completed a course in mediation prior to starting the clerkship. Trial court law clerks serving as mediators must complete a 12-hour mediation training or its equivalent.

Salary Information:
- Supreme Court: $76,400
- Supreme Court Appellate Division: $69,750
- Superior Court Assignment Judge: $63,950
- Superior Court Chancery Division (General Equity): $63,950
- Superior Court Law Division (Civil and Criminal): $58,900
- Superior Court Chancery Division (Family): $58,900
- Tax Court: $58,900

The salaries listed are based on a 52-week court term in addition to a one-week or two-week overlap, paid at a separate weekly rate. Salaries for the 2025-2026 court term are to be determined based on funding availability.

Additional Information:
- The Judiciary offers a hybrid work schedule, allowing up to four days per month of remote work outside of Judiciary buildings, subject to certain technical requirements.
- Law clerks may hold outside employment with prior approval as per the Code of Conduct for Judiciary Employees.
- A valid New Jersey driver’s license is required if the operation of a vehicle is necessary for the position.
- US citizenship is not required, but candidates must be authorized to work in the US.
- Selected candidates must agree to a thorough background check.
- Law clerks are not subject to the New Jersey residency law during their court term, but those moving into another state position after the clerkship must comply.
