Job Title: Summer Student Volunteer - Unclassified Duties (General Legal)

Job Responsibilities:
The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) offers unpaid internships throughout the year, lasting from 12 weeks to 12 months. The duties of interns vary based on the department or office in which they are placed. The internship program aims to provide valuable experience that contributes to both educational and professional growth, and the experience gained may be applicable in future employment endeavors across federal, state, local governments, or the private sector.

Interns assist the CFTC with tasks set out by various teams, including research, data capturing, and working closely with different team members to gain insight into the Commission's work. Interns may be assigned to work in various divisions or offices within the CFTC, each with specific duties:

1. Chairman/Commissioner's Office:
- Research and analyze market issues.
- Draft memos summarizing research and brief the Chairman or Commissioner.
- Draft public statements.
- Attend meetings with market participants.

2. Division of Enforcement (DOE):
- Research and write legal memoranda, including pleadings and papers.
- Review and analyze evidence in ongoing investigations.
- Assist attorneys in preparing investigative testimony, depositions, and discovery.

3. Division of Market Oversight (DMO):
- Assist in examining DCM and SEF self-regulatory and rule enforcement programs.
- Help review DCM designation and SEF registration applications.
- Review and analyze SEF Annual Compliance Reports and draft summary memoranda.
- Review and analyze DCM and SEF rules.

4. Market Participants Division (MPD):
- Assist with technical analyses of intricate regulations and industry governing activities.
- Prepare legal reports and analytical fact summaries.
- Review documents and conduct background and factual research on swap dealers and futures market intermediaries.

5. Office of International Affairs (OIA):
- Research, analyze, and monitor international standards, legislative proposals, statutes, regulations, advisories, guidance, and market developments.
- Collaborate with OIA staff in preparing briefing memoranda and presentation materials for international meetings.
- Assist and join CFTC staff in meetings with external stakeholders and draft related summaries and analysis.

Education and Experience Information:
To be eligible for this volunteer internship, candidates must meet the following requirements:
- Be a student accepted for enrollment or currently enrolled and in good standing as a . or candidate in an ABA-accredited law school, on a full or half-time basis.
- Have completed at least one year of law school by the requested start date.
- Submit academic transcripts demonstrating eligibility requirements. Unofficial transcripts are acceptable during the application process but official transcripts will be required if selected.

Candidates should also be . Citizens or Nationals and comply with Selective Service registration requirements for male applicants unless exempt. Experience may be gained in the public, private sector, or volunteer service, and part-time work is considered on a prorated basis.

Salary Information:
This is an unpaid volunteer internship position, and volunteers are not eligible to receive agency benefits. The position is designed to encourage interest in public service careers and provide valuable work experience.

Additional Information:
- Students may work during the school year and/or during summer or school vacation periods.
- The nature of the volunteer assignment and work schedule will be established upon onboarding.
- Students seeking course credit for externship positions are responsible for coordinating with their educational institution.
