Responsibilities

What you’ll do

Represent Liberty Mutual and its policyholders in civil litigation and workers' compensation matters involving claims for monetary damages or compensation for personal injury or property damage of heavy value, including trial.

Use Litigation Protocols to develop and revise appropriate legal strategy for discovery, investigation, handling and trial/hearing of cases or matters; advises, communicates and develops those strategies with Liberty Mutual's Claims Representatives and insured Clients, as appropriate.

Understand and creatively use technology; apply technology to the process of law to improve quality and reduce cost.

Conduct necessary and appropriate discovery, hearings, trials, depositions, oral arguments, mediations, arbitrations and similar proceedings. Research the law applicable to cases or matters; drafts legal documents, pleadings, motions, briefs and opinions as required. If requested, conduct settlement negotiations.

Advise, communicate and confer with Claims Representatives and Insured Clients, rendering clear, unambiguous legal opinions and advice. Personally meet with, and maintain good relations and communications with Claims Representatives and Insured Clients as required.

Remain current with developments in the law; understand medical, scientific, construction, products, engineering or similar issues and defenses involved with cases or matters.

Prepare and conduct training sessions for Legal, Claims or other departments as required.

Provide daily direction and guidance to junior attorneys.

Understand and creatively use technology; apply technology to the process of law to improve quality and reduce cost.

Act as a team or group leader for an assigned group within the office.

Interface with Home Office Legal department.

Perform other duties as assigned.


Salary Information:

Job title: Insurance Defense Trial Attorney
Experience: Minimum of six years as an attorney with trial experience, experience representing insurance companies
Salary range: $119,000 - $210,000 per year
Pay philosophy: Determined by factors such as skills, experience, education, certifications, and location
Benefits: Eligible for performance bonuses, 20 days of flexible time off per year, personal holidays, pension plan, 401(k) plan with matching contributions
Remote work: Position is primarily remote with required appearances

Job Responsibilities:

Qualifications:

California State Bar membership
Appropriate special licenses to practice before boards or federal courts preferred
Minimum of six years of successful experience as an attorney with trial experience
Experience representing insurance companies
Talent for cultivating strong working relationships
Detail-oriented and analytical thinking skills
Persuasive oral and written communication skills
General knowledge of insurance law
Familiarity with the latest developments in the practice of law
Proficiency with legal technologies and remote work
JD degree
