Job Title: Fall 2025 Law Clerk
Job Responsibilities:
The **Members Only** (OPD) is seeking law clerks for its Juvenile Protection Division. The primary responsibility of the law clerks is to advocate for youth in the justice system. Law clerks will work closely with Juvenile Defenders on various aspects of case preparation. Key tasks include:
- Observing Juvenile Court proceedings
- Drafting modification motions
- Locating and interviewing witnesses
- Visiting clients in detention and placements
- Drafting letters and memos
- Assisting with case development in and out of the courtroom
- Conducting research
Law clerks are considered essential members of the defense team and will receive training on child development, best practices, and juvenile reform. The internship experience is tailored to meet the academic and professional goals of the individual.
Education and Experience Information:
Candidates must be current law students or recent law school graduates. The selection process favors candidates with strong written and oral communication skills, the ability to adapt in a dynamic environment, and a strong work ethic. Preference is given to those with experience working with juveniles and who have completed a course in Criminal Procedure.
Law clerks join the OPD during the spring, summer, and fall, with applications accepted on a rolling basis. The final placement decisions are made by the District Offices based on the candidate's preferences and the availability of positions. Law clerks are expected to start by September 2, 2025, and work for at least 10 weeks.
Salary Information:
This is an unpaid volunteer position. However, the OPD supports externs seeking academic credits for their work and sponsors grant or other outside funding applications where applicable.

Interested candidates should submit an application that includes a resume, cover letter, list of four professional references, a writing sample not exceeding 15 pages, and an undergraduate transcript. This position requires in-person attendance, and law clerks must commit to working consistent days and hours throughout the duration of their clerkship.
