Job Title: Fall 2025 Law Clerk

Job Responsibilities:
The Fall 2025 Law Clerk position at the organization involves working closely with dedicated Juvenile Defenders on all aspects of case preparation, thereby gaining substantive skills, written work product, and real case experience. Key responsibilities for law clerks include:
- Conducting legal research.
- Drafting motions and memoranda.
- Engaging in case planning.
- Conducting investigations.
- Coordinating with witnesses.
- Preparing for and participating in trials, hearings, and/or sentencings.

Law clerks are fully integrated into trial teams and collaborate with attorneys, investigators, paralegals, social workers, and other support staff to ensure comprehensive and zealous defense for clients. The role emphasizes hands-on experience in client-centered and team-based representation.

Education and Experience Information:
Eligible candidates for the Fall 2025 Law Clerk position are current law students or recent law school graduates. The organization provides opportunities for law students to join district offices across the State of Maryland as law clerks. Law clerks can join the organization three times a year: winter, spring, and fall. The application process is centralized, but final selections are made by the district offices based on candidates' preferences for office placement.

Candidates must be law students, typically in their 1L, 2L, or 3L years. The organization supports externs seeking academic credits for their work and may sponsor grant or other outside funding applications.

Application Process:
Interested candidates must complete an application and submit it along with the following materials via email: resume, cover letter, a list of four professional references, a writing sample (no longer than 15 pages), and an undergraduate transcript. Applications must be submitted by August 1, 2025, and incomplete applications will not be considered. The position requires in-person attendance, with all students starting the clerkship by September 2, 2025, for a minimum duration of 10 weeks.

Salary Information:
The law clerk positions are unpaid volunteer roles. However, the organization supports externs seeking credits for their work and may sponsor grant or other outside funding applications.
