Job Title: Staff Attorney – LASSA (Full-Time Position)

Job Responsibilities:
A Staff Attorney at the organization is responsible for providing high-quality legal representation in civil legal matters to survivors of sexual assault and trauma. The attorney will gather evidence, advise clients on their rights, draft legal documents, and conduct civil lawsuits. Key responsibilities include:

- Interviewing clients and witnesses with cultural competence
- Representing clients in court and before quasi-judicial or administrative agencies
- Interpreting laws, rulings, and regulations for clients and the client community
- Providing legal assistance in areas of general civil law, such as housing, foreclosure prevention, landlord-tenant, family, consumer, probate, special education, public benefits, and bankruptcy
- Designing and executing outreach and community legal education
- Collaborating with partner agencies, including domestic violence shelters and crisis centers, to provide coordinated advocacy
- Participating in local, regional, and statewide networks of service providers for survivors of sexual assault and trauma
- Referring clients within these networks
- Supervising and coordinating activities of legal, clerical, volunteer, or student workers
- Handling a caseload involving substantial litigation and other justice-related advocacy
- Attending evening legal clinics
- Devising and participating in community legal education programs
- Establishing meaningful relationships with community organizations
- Conducting intake at shelters
- Participating in outreach offered by the organization

In fulfilling these duties, the attorney is expected to adhere to the organization's policies and procedures and the professional responsibilities outlined by the Texas Disciplinary Rules of Professional Conduct, the Texas Lawyers Creed, and the American Bar Association’s Standards for Providers of Civil Legal Services to the Poor.

Education and Experience Information:
- Licensed to practice law in Texas
- Preferred experience in handling contested family law cases
- Preferred experience working with survivors of domestic violence and/or sexual assault
- Strong understanding of Texas Family Code, Texas Rules of Civil Procedure, and Texas Rules of Evidence
- Prior legal services, public interest, or volunteer experience serving low-income persons is preferred
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to think and plan strategically and develop and implement projects
- Strong work ethic and sense of accountability
- Fluency in Spanish, both verbal and written, is preferred
- Excellent attendance record
- Ability to engage in occasional travel throughout the service area of the organization

Salary Information:
The current entry-level salary for a new attorney is $73,815 per year. The salary for the successful applicant may be significantly higher, depending on the applicant’s years of experience.
