Internship Opportunities at NJOPD: Gain Hands-On Experience in Legal Representation
- Fall internships available from June 15th to July 31st
- Year-round opportunities available statewide
- Work with attorneys, investigators, and staff at NJOPD
- Gain real-world experience in investigations, client communication, research and writing, trial preparation and advocacy
- Excellent training and mentorship opportunities
- Assist with ongoing and/or systemic projects related to the representation of NJOPD clients
- Opportunities available for 2Ls and 3Ls
- Law students may appear in court under supervision of NJOPD attorneys

- All applicants must be interviewed, complete necessary paperwork, and be screened and approved prior to being offered an internship/externship with NJOPD
About NJOPD: Providing First Class Legal Representation to Indigent Individuals
- NJOPD provides legal representation at both trial and appellate levels
- Defends individuals charged with criminal offenses
- Represents individuals whose children have been removed based on allegations of abuse and neglect
- Represents children who have been removed
- Represents individuals involuntarily committed to State psychiatric facilities
- Represents individuals facing Megan’s Law tier classification
- Represents individuals seeking post-conviction relief
- Also represents clients in Recovery Court and Intensive Supervision Program matters
- Interns will gain hands-on experience in these practice areas
Internship Duties for s: Assisting Attorneys and Staff at NJOPD
- Conduct legal research and analysis
- Draft motions, briefs, memoranda, and reports
- Assist with trial preparation
- Participate in client and witness interviews
- Observe and appear in courtroom proceedings
- Attend training programs
- Gain real-world experience in legal representation
Requirements for Internship Applicants
- Must be a law student who has completed 2 years of law school
- Must be interviewed by regional office and/or Internship Coordinator
- Must complete confidentiality and ethics paperwork
- Must be screened and approved prior to being offered an internship/externship with NJOPD
