Job Title: Summer Student Volunteer - Unclassified Duties (General Legal)
Organization: Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC)
Job Responsibilities:
The CFTC offers unpaid internships year-round, lasting from 12 weeks to 12 months, providing valuable experience contributing to educational and professional growth. Interns assist the CFTC with various tasks, such as research, data capturing, and collaborating with team members to understand the Commission's work. Legal interns, specifically law students, are assigned projects that cover a broad range of the Commission’s work and can be placed in several divisions or offices. Here are the responsibilities based on different divisions:
1. Chairman/Commissioner's Office:
- Research and analyze market issues.
- Draft memos summarizing research and brief the Chairman or Commissioner.
- Draft public statements.
- Attend meetings with market participants.
2. Division of Enforcement (DOE):
- Research and write legal memoranda, including pleadings and papers.
- Review and analyze evidence in ongoing investigations.
- Assist attorneys in preparing investigative testimony, depositions, and discovery.
3. Division of Market Oversight (DMO):
- Assist in examining and assessing the adequacy of DCM and SEF self-regulatory and rule enforcement programs.
- Help review and assess DCM designation and SEF registration applications.
- Review and analyze SEF Annual Compliance Reports and draft summary memos.
- Review and analyze DCM and SEF rules.
4. Market Participants Division (MPD):
- Assist with technical analyses of intricate regulations and industry governing activities.
- Prepare legal reports and analytical fact summaries.
- Review documents and conduct background and factual research on swap dealers and futures market intermediaries.
5. Office of International Affairs (OIA):
- Research, analyze, and monitor relevant international standards and legislative proposals.
- Collaborate in preparing briefing memoranda and presentation materials for international meetings.
- Assist and join in meetings and discussions with external stakeholders and draft related summaries and analyses.
Education and Experience Information:
To be eligible for this volunteer internship, applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Be a . Citizen or National.
- Be actively enrolled at least part-time in an accredited college/university.
- Be in good standing as a . or candidate in an ABA accredited law school.
- Completed at least one year of law school by the requested start date.
- Submit academic transcripts (unofficial is acceptable).
The experience may be gained in the public, private sector, or volunteer service, with one year of experience referring to full-time work. Part-time work is considered on a prorated basis.
Key Requirements:
- Suitable for Federal employment, determined by background investigation.
- Selective Service registration required for male applicants, unless exempt.
Education:
Applicants must submit a copy of their transcripts or equivalent. All education must be accredited by an institution recognized by the . Department of Education. For foreign education, applicants must show that the education credentials have been evaluated and deemed equivalent to those gained in an accredited . education program.
Salary Information:
This is an unpaid volunteer position with no compensation. Volunteers are not eligible to receive agency benefits.
Additional Information:
- The CFTC seeks non-paid volunteers to encourage interest in public service careers and provide valuable work experience.
- Student Volunteers may work during the school year and/or during summer or school vacation periods.
- The nature of the volunteer assignment and the work schedule will be established once on-board.
