Job Title: Municipal Law Litigation Attorney
Job Responsibilities:
- Represent California cities and local government entities in legal proceedings related to zoning, land use, nuisance abatement, and municipal code enforcement.
- Draft, review, and argue motions in civil litigation matters, such as injunctions, restraining orders, and abatement actions.
- Provide legal counsel to city departments, planning commissions, and city councils on matters of land use, permitting, zoning compliance, and constitutional issues related to property rights and enforcement actions.
- Initiate and defend litigation in state and administrative courts, focusing on enforcing local ordinances and defending city decisions against legal challenges.
- Conduct legal research and prepare memoranda, legal opinions, and strategy briefs on complex zoning and constitutional law matters.
- Participate in public hearings and city meetings, providing legal guidance to elected officials and staff.
- Collaborate with city planners, code enforcement officers, and public works personnel to support effective enforcement strategies and ensure compliance with local and state regulations.
- Monitor and interpret legislative, regulatory, and case law developments, advising clients on potential impacts.
- Manage a litigation caseload from inception through resolution, including discovery, depositions, court appearances, settlement negotiations, and trial preparation.
- Train and educate municipal clients on best practices in code enforcement, regulatory compliance, and land-use governance.
Education and Experience Information:
- Juris Doctor (.) degree from an accredited law school.
- Active membership in the California State Bar and in good standing.
- Minimum of 4 years of litigation experience, focusing on zoning, land use, nuisance abatement, or municipal enforcement matters.
- Experience representing or opposing California municipal governments in legal proceedings.
- Strong knowledge of California Government Code, Planning and Zoning Law, and related statutory/regulatory frameworks.
- Familiarity with constitutional law regarding property rights, due process, takings, and regulatory enforcement.
- Proven ability to manage litigation files independently, including conducting discovery, preparing motions, negotiating settlements, and appearing in court.
- Excellent legal research, analytical, and writing skills.
- Strong verbal communication skills and the ability to present complex legal concepts to non-lawyers, including city officials and public bodies.
- Comfortable attending and speaking at public hearings, administrative proceedings, and council meetings.
Salary Information:
- 165,000 / Yearly
