ABOUT NJOPD

The NJOPD is dedicated to providing first-class legal representation to indigent individuals at both the trial and appellate levels. Our attorneys defend individuals charged with criminal offenses and also represent individuals in cases involving parental representation, law guardianship, mental health advocacy, Megan's Law tier classification, and post-conviction relief. We also have specialized units for recovery court, intensive supervision programs, and forensic science.

INTERNSHIPS FOR LAW STUDENTS

Our internships are open to 2L and 3L law students who want to gain practical experience in the legal field. As an intern, you will have the opportunity to assist attorneys and staff with case preparation, litigation, and ongoing projects related to the representation of NJOPD clients. This includes conducting legal research and analysis, drafting legal documents, participating in client and witness interviews, and attending courtroom proceedings. Interns who have completed 2 years of law school may also have the opportunity to appear in court under the supervision of NJOPD attorneys.

SALARY AND EXPERIENCE INFORMATION

- Internships are available year-round and statewide.
- Opportunities are available for both Fall (June 15th - July 31st), Spring (October 15th - November 30th), and Summer (December 15th - April 15th) semesters.
- All applicants must be interviewed by regional offices and/or the Internship Coordinator, complete confidentiality and ethics paperwork, and be screened and approved before being offered an internship/externship.
- Interns will receive excellent training and mentorship opportunities.
- Interns may have the opportunity to appear in court under the supervision of NJOPD attorneys.
- Interns will gain real-world experience in conducting legal research, drafting legal documents, and participating in courtroom proceedings.
