Job Title: Attorney IV
Job Responsibilities:
- Perform advanced legal work with minimal supervision and oversight in assigned areas.
- Engage in litigation and legal research, draft legal documents, and interpret laws, rules, and regulations.
- Make tactical and legal decisions in connection with assigned cases or prosecute complex general or special-category felony cases in court.
- Evaluate criminal complaints to decide whether to accept or reject cases for prosecution, determine appropriate charges, and prepare necessary documentation for indictment.
- Review documentation, conduct legal research, interview witnesses, gather evidence, and determine appropriate actions for assigned cases or lawsuits.
- Draft, file, and respond to necessary motions, briefs, or other legal documents for trials and hearings.
- Explain legal processes to potential witnesses, prepare them for court testimony, and keep victims and their families informed about case status.
- Gather, prepare, and present evidence, exhibits, and related materials for trials or hearings.
- Represent the State or client in trials and hearings, including conducting jury selection, presenting opening statements, conducting direct and cross-examinations, and presenting closing arguments.
- Negotiate settlements or plea bargains and obtain necessary approvals for agreements reached.
- Prepare necessary legal documents for settlements or plea bargains, secure proper signatures, and file documents as required.
- Manage court dockets and case schedules to ensure deadlines are met and documentation is accurate and up-to-date.
- Train or assist in training Attorneys I, II, and III.
- Perform duties of the Section Chief on a short-term temporary basis as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience Information:
- Graduation from an accredited law school with a current license to practice law in the State of Texas.
- Two years and six months of experience practicing law.
- Experience as a lead prosecutor for all levels of felony offenses, serving as lead counsel in civil litigation, or extensive appellate work on direct appeals is required.
Special Requirements/Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Current license to practice law in the State of Texas.
Physical/Environmental Requirements:
- Normal office environment.
