Job Responsibilities:
The primary focus of the Civil Attorney position involves managing all aspects of an eminent domain practice aimed at acquiring property for public purposes. This role includes defending civil claims and handling litigation related to inverse condemnation. The responsibilities encompass a range of legal activities such as:
- Engaging in telephone calls, conferences, and correspondence related to legal matters
- Conducting investigations and legal research
- Preparing pleadings, motions, discovery documents, briefs, and handling trial and appeal processes
- Developing litigation strategies, enhancing skills, and performing case evaluations in collaboration with other attorneys within the department
- Attending court sessions for assigned cases
- Managing administrative duties like reporting claims and submitting attorney billable hours
- Reviewing and revising attorney work products and managing case flow to meet deadlines
- Providing legal advice to county officials and department heads, and responding to public inquiries
- Reviewing and drafting various types of contracts such as Rule 11 Agreements, purchase/sale agreements, land and easement acquisition agreements, and more
- Participating in emergency management activities during local states of disaster as directed by county managers
Education and Experience Information:
- A Doctor of Jurisprudence degree is required
- Must be licensed by the Texas Bar
- A minimum of 4 years of job-related experience is required
- Experience in real estate transactions, litigation, and/or condemnation is highly desirable
- Strong verbal and written communication skills are necessary
- Strong organizational and interpersonal skills are essential, with the ability to effectively interact with the public, other employees, and elected officials
- Admission to the Southern District of Texas and the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals is desirable
Salary Information:
The starting salary range for this position is to per hour, based on qualifications
