Job Title: Legal Fellowship

Job Responsibilities:
The Legal Fellowship involves serving clients with their legal needs and potentially engaging in several additional activities such as:
- Clinical supervision
- Staffing high-impact cases with nationwide implications
- Engaging in movement lawyering and community organizing
- Participating in legislative and policy advocacy
The fellow may work on various poverty law issues, including but not limited to:
- Access to public benefits
- Housing access and affordability
- Consumer protection
- Workers’ rights
- Healthcare and rights of people with disabilities
- Immigrants’ rights
- Access to education and civil rights enforcement in schools
- Children’s mental health rights
- Juvenile legal system involvement and the rights of incarcerated children
- The criminalization of poverty through policies and practices that target people due to poverty and race
The position entails carrying out the work proposed in the candidate’s fellowship application according to the terms and requirements of the fellowship.

Education and Experience Information:
- Candidates must be rising third-year law students, third-year law students, or recent law graduates.
- A strong commitment to social, economic, and racial justice is required.
- Candidates should have a demonstrated record of public service.
- Mission-aligned experience (work, volunteer, or lived) partnering with and advocating in low-wealth communities and communities of color is required.
- Outstanding oral advocacy, research, writing, organizational, and leadership skills are essential.
- The ability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively is necessary.
- Commitment to taking and passing the Virginia Bar Exam and fulfilling all requirements for licensure as an attorney in Virginia is required.
- For applicants interested in working in Falls Church or within the Immigrant Advocacy Program or Worker Justice Program, Spanish proficiency is highly preferred.

Salary Information:
Salary and benefits depend on the terms of the fellowship.

Additional Information:
- Fellows will begin their fellowship in September 2026.
- LAJC is seeking to host one or more recent law graduates as public service fellows in Richmond, Falls Church, or Charlottesville, Virginia.
- Candidates must obtain fellowship funding from a private funding entity in partnership with LAJC.
- The application process involves a four-part process including an interview, development of fellowship application materials, preparation and submission of required materials for fellowship funding, and beginning the fellowship if successful.
- Areas of particular interest to LAJC include Civil Rights & Racial Justice, Housing & Consumer Justice, Worker Justice, Youth Justice, and Health Justice and Public Benefits.
- LAJC requires all employees to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or have an approved medical or religious exemption as a qualification of employment.
