Director of Professional Development

The Director of Professional Development will manage a team and oversee attorney training and development, curriculum, and programs, continuing legal education (CLE), career development and counseling. This role requires a strategic thinker with a deep understanding of the legal industry and a proven track record in attorney professional development.

This role offers a hybrid work arrangement, allowing you to work both from home and at your designated HB office. The frequency of in-office work will be determined by business needs and guided by your department's directives. This position can be based near any of our office locations: San Francisco, Sacramento, San Rafael, Walnut Creek, or Los Angeles. This position reports to the Chief Human Resources Officer.
Core Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership

Create and implement a professional development strategy aligned with the firm's short term and long-term goals.
Collaborate with Executive Leadership, Section Leaders, Practice Group leaders, and other attorneys to build trusted advisor relationships, identify training and program needs, and develop effective strategies for delivering and evaluating the success of these initiatives.

Training and Program Development

Design, deliver, and oversee firmwide learning initiatives for attorneys, focusing on professional development, client service skills, and essential technical, substantive, and legal competencies.
Direct the continued evolution and delivery of HB programs, including the First Year Program, ensuring that the programming and content each year reflects the continued evolution of the firm and legal talent.
Maintain and nurture existing and potential relationships with external consultants, coaches, and speakers, as well as maintain active involvement with appropriate professional organizations.
Oversee tracking of all firm attorneys' California Continuing Legal Education (CLE) compliance.

Coaching and Mentorship

Build and maintain strong professional relationships with attorneys, developing an in-depth understanding of professional aspirations, experiences, strengths, development needs and relevant personal circumstances, exercise discretion in all dealings.
Oversee and enhance the firm’s mentor and advisor programs.

Cross-Functional Collaboration and Relationship Management

Partner with the Recruiting Department to support attorney orientation, integration, and overall onboarding experience.
Collaborate with the business development team, including alumni networks, to support external training offerings, as well as career development, connections, and transitions.

Data and Trends

Evaluate and measure training and curriculum to ensure they remain relevant, effective, and aligned with the firm's current and future needs, as well as its strategic objectives.
Maintain networks and in-depth knowledge of trends and developments in the talent development field both within and outside legal industry.

Team Management

Lead the professional development team to effectively implement and execute programs, events, and initiatives.
Oversee the growth and enhancement of the team’s training and development skills.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI)

Collaborate with the various HB departments and committees on initiatives that foster a diverse and inclusive culture and promotes engagement and retention.

Budget and Resource Management

Develop and manage Professional Development Department budget ensuring resources are allocated efficiently to support learning and development goals.

Required Skills, Abilities and Qualifications

Ten years of experience professional development within a law firm; . strongly preferred.
Legal industry expertise; understanding legal practice areas, trends, and challenges.
Excellent interpersonal, analytical, written/oral communication and team skills; creative problem solver; innovative thinker.
Excellent judgment, discretion, and diplomacy
Demonstrated expertise in managing teams, along with the ability to earn the trust and confidence of senior leaders.
Experience in strategic thinking and planning.
Experience with performance metrics and using data to evaluate training impact and drive continuous improvement.
Experience in change management a plus.
Excellent planning and organizational skills, with ability to manage multiple projects at once; ability to realign priorities, as needed; drive projects to successful completion; high attention to detail.
Works effectively and collaboratively at all levels
Willingness/ability to travel to other office locations.

Salary

Hanson Bridgett offers a competitive salary and benefits package. The annual salary for this California-based role is anticipated to be in the area $230,000 - $260,000, and represents the firm’s good faith and reasonable estimate of possible compensation at the time of posting. Actual compensation is negotiable, and will depend upon a number of factors, including but not limited to, the candidate’s years of experience, qualifications, and skill set.
