Job Title: Civil Practice Legal Intern - Fall 2025

Job Responsibilities:
The Civil Practice Legal Intern for Fall 2025 at the organization will work under the supervision of Civil Practice attorneys in various NYC Borough offices and specialized units. The interns will assist attorneys who are dedicated to improving the lives of low-income New Yorkers by helping vulnerable families and individuals achieve and maintain essential life necessities such as housing, health care, food, and subsistence income or self-sufficiency. The attorneys play a critical role in enhancing family and community stability and security by resolving a comprehensive range of legal issues, including anti-eviction, domestic violence, family law, immigration, employment, tax, health, elder law, HIV/AIDS, and consumer law issues.

Interns will be involved in a variety of tasks such as:
- Drafting motions, pleadings, memoranda of law, and affidavits.
- Conducting legal research.
- Attending court and administrative hearings with attorneys.
- Assisting with client interviews.
- Performing other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience Information:
To qualify for this internship, candidates must be current 2L or 3L law school students in good standing. While relevant clinical program or work experience is preferred, it is not required. Applicants should demonstrate a commitment to serving racially and socioeconomically oppressed communities. The ability to work collaboratively with all staff members and manage multiple tasks and deadlines is essential. Fluency in languages besides English, particularly Spanish, is helpful but not required.

Salary Information:
This is a non-paid internship position. However, interns who meet specific eligibility criteria have the opportunity to receive a $1,000 stipend from the Howard Rossbach fund. This fund was established in memory of Judge J. Howard Rossbach and aims to support 4-5 interns annually who demonstrate financial need and lack funding for their internship at the organization. To be eligible for the stipend, applicants must be enrolled as a degree-seeking undergraduate or graduate student at any accredited institution, complete the Howard Rossbach Internship Stipend Form at the time of submitting their internship application, be accepted to participate in an internship program at the organization, demonstrate financial need, lack funding for their internship, and submit a statement reflecting their strong interest in working at the organization upon graduation. The stipend will be treated as taxable income.
