Job Title: Trial Attorney II
Job Responsibilities:
Under the limited direction of a managing attorney, the Trial Attorney II is responsible for performing legal counsel duties in the defense and representation of the company in various courts of law and related appearances. The key responsibilities include:
- Handling complex cases at the trial level under the state administrative process.
- Defending workers' compensation cases.
- Taking depositions, analyzing testimony, and preparing and filing related reports.
- Representing the company in appearances at hearings and conferences, and preparing and filing related reports.
- Researching and preparing complex pleadings for cases at the trial level under the state administrative process.
- Providing advice, training, and recommendations on case handling strategies and tactics to representatives of the Claims department.
- Performing legal research at all levels, including advising clients through the appellate procedures.
- Assisting in training Trial Attorney I, if necessary.
- Applying principles of logical thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
- Responding positively to direction and critique of performance.
- Consistently maintaining a professional and appropriate demeanor.
- Performing other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience Information:
- Juris Doctorate: Law school graduate and member in good standing of the State Bar is required.
- 4+ years of experience as a Trial Attorney for legal defense of workers' compensation claims is required.
- Ability to communicate both orally and in writing in an articulate, persuasive, precise, and professional manner.
- Experience with training small groups in current legal practices and procedures in the field of workers’ compensation defense and subrogation.
- Ability to lift legal files, including documents and exhibits, up to a weight of 15 pounds.
- Must be willing and able to travel using all means of public transportation, as well as automobile driving, to various California venues when live appearances are requested or required.
- Valid Driver License in good standing is required.
Salary Information:
The expected salary range for this position is $139, to $175,. Actual pay will be adjusted based on experience, geographic location, and other job-related factors as permitted by law. Qualifications may warrant placement in a different job level.
