Job Title: Supervising Attorney (Right to Counsel)
Job Responsibilities:
The Supervising Attorney at **Members Only**, part of the Legal Services NYC network, is tasked with overseeing the practice of several housing staff attorneys in a comprehensive range of housing matters. The responsibilities include:
- Supervising regular appearances in civil, supreme, and federal court, as well as administrative proceedings.
- Reviewing draft pleadings, motions, and court submissions to ensure accuracy and compliance with legal standards.
- Supporting the filing of affirmative cases on behalf of tenants and tenant groups.
- Collaborating closely with the Housing Unit Director, Deputy Directors, and other Supervising Attorneys to guide the direction of the Housing Unit.
- Developing and strengthening relationships with partner community organizations.
- Identifying systemic housing-related trends that could be impacted by strategic litigation.
Additionally, the role involves maintaining a personal caseload and focusing on the implementation of New York City's groundbreaking Right to Counsel law. Supervising Attorneys are expected to work in a fast-paced environment and employ creative strategies in the pursuit of justice.
Education and Experience Information:
Candidates for the Supervising Attorney position should have:
- A demonstrated passion for social justice and a commitment to working with low-income communities and communities of color.
- Excellent analytical and writing skills.
- Experience with housing issues and advocacy.
- Enthusiasm for partnering with community-based advocates and organizations.
Prior experience working with community-based organizations is preferred. Proficiency in Spanish or another language commonly spoken in the communities served by **Members Only** is also advantageous.
Salary Information:
The salary for the Supervising Attorney position is determined based on experience, with a range of $108,360 to $173,376 USD. The compensation package includes excellent health and dental insurance, an employer contribution to a pre-tax 403(b) pension plan, and generous leave time.
