Job Description:
The **Members Only** is seeking a motivated and passionate law student to join their Immigration Justice Project (IJP) as a Summer Law Fellow. This is an unpaid, full-time position for 10 weeks, from May 27, 2025 to August 1, 2025.
The ABA is a member-based organization dedicated to promoting access to justice, a fair legal process, and respect for the rule of law both domestically and internationally. As a Summer Law Fellow at the IJP, you will have the opportunity to contribute to this mission by providing pro bono legal services to immigrants and asylum seekers in the San Diego region.
Responsibilities:
- Assist attorneys in providing pro se assistance and direct representation to immigrants and asylum seekers in removal proceedings
- Draft legal arguments and motions, conduct legal research, and work with clients to develop evidence and prepare testimony
- Learn about common forms of legal relief from deportation and assist pro se immigrants in detention facilities to prepare their cases
- Observe immigration court proceedings
- Participate in rigorous training and gain a range of experience in immigration law
Requirements:
- Rising 2L, 3L, or LLM students with previous legal internship experience preferred
- Foreign language ability and immigration law experience or coursework required
Department Overview:
The mission of the IJP is to promote due process and access to justice at all levels of the immigration and appellate court process. They provide direct representation for indigent immigrants and facilitate legal orientation programs for unrepresented immigrants in removal proceedings. The IJP focuses on serving immigrants who are detained, under monitoring, suffering from severe mental illness, or are members of a vulnerable population in the San Diego region.
