Job Title: Staff Attorney, Grandparents Raising Grandchildren

Job Responsibilities:

1. Client-related Duties:
- Handle all aspects of client representation, including screening and interviewing walk-in or emergency clients, conducting client interviews, filing necessary court documents, analyzing case facts, preparing for court appearances, assessing legal needs, and making referrals.
- Manage case-related tasks such as data entry, preparing retainers and letters, drafting court documents, client communication, preparing case files for hearings/trials, maintaining case files, conducting home visits, and utilizing interpretation services for Limited English Proficient older adults.
- Provide information and referrals to older adults regarding custodial issues and link them to resources and supportive services.

2. Community Outreach and Education:
- Represent the organization at professional committees/coalitions related to grandparent custodial issues.
- Develop and present legal education workshops and aid in developing educational materials and resources for older adults and professionals.
- Plan, organize, and attend community outreach and tabling events and assist with community clinics focused on adult guardianship issues.
- Coordinate with the Project Director to update communication tools with project-related information.

3. Additional Responsibilities:
- Participate in scheduled project-related meetings, staff, and legal team meetings.
- Provide support to colleagues agency-wide, assist with on-boarding staff, and follow organization’s personnel and legal policies and procedures.
- Assist with quality control, case management data collection, and reporting.
- Engage in the organization’s culture of philanthropy and events to support the mission.

4. Project-Based Duties:
- Provide civil legal assistance to older adults with custody or dependency issues, including filing and representing in child custody petitions, child support, protection from abuse matters, and related litigation.
- Provide information, support, and advocacy in related criminal proceedings and collaborate with law enforcement and District Attorneys.
- Work with Legal advocates to provide social service referrals and support, maintain resources and referral information, assist with GRG focused community clinics and client council, and assist with pro bono recruitment, training, and case processes.

5. Systemic Advocacy:
- Identify systemic problems affecting older Pennsylvanians related to grandfamilies and develop creative solutions with local, statewide, and national partners.
- Participate in monthly Learning Community meetings and check-ins with grant technical assistance providers.

Education and Experience Information:

- Required Education and Experience:
- Juris Doctor
- Active member of the Pennsylvania Bar in good standing

- Preferred Education and Experience:
- Experience working with older adults
- Experience representing in dependency and/or family court proceedings
- Second language proficiency preferred
- Courtroom experience

- Highly professional, organized, energetic, flexible, and culturally sensitive
- Excellent writing, organizational, interpersonal, and presentation skills
- Interest and ability to work with older people and persons of different backgrounds

Work Conditions:

- Operates in a professional office environment with the use of standard office equipment such as computers, phones, and photocopiers.

Physical Demands:

- The role requires occasional standing, walking, using hands, reaching, sitting, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, talking, or hearing.
- Must occasionally lift and/or move objects up to 10 pounds.
- Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Salary Information:

- This is a full-time exempt hybrid position based in Philadelphia.
- Excellent benefits valued at over $20,000, including fully paid health and dental for employees, long- and short-term disability, 401k, flexible spending plan, and generous holidays and leave time.
- Salary range is commensurate with years of experience and the organization’s salary structure, starting at $66,000.
